Move poor NHL Franchises to THESE cities... Oust: Nashville, Carolina, Florida, Columbus, Anaheim, etc.?
I'd like to start this question by saying I don't care about retorts of the few fans of the franchises I'm going to mention, I'm out for what's BEST for hockey, not what appeases 4 people rooting for a southern hockey team.
Cities that need a team: - Winnipeg, Wtf did they EVER leave??? - Salt Lake City, The Greater SLC population is well over a million, the climate is cold, mountainous, very hockey like, the only competition are the Jazz, and the mass population there is made up of relatively wealthy caucasians which are usually the market for hockey. If it worked in Denver wth can't it work in SLC? And what a GREAT rivalry they could have with the Avalanche! - Seattle, cold, dreary, hockey hungry, Vancouver rivalry anyone? - Portland, if not Seattle why not here? Refer to Seattle comments as to why. - Milwaukee... Um, last I checked Wisconsin had ONE team that actually matters, the Packers, a second franchise wouldn't hurt, the Bucks are no competition.
I could go on for hours.

Well before I moved Anaheim I would move the Kings(probably forgot they have a team in L.A., it seems that L.A. does). As to what happened to the Jets, um lack of fan support and a cheap Canadian dollar at that time(remember there was NO Salary Cap) and most long time hockey fans KNOW what happened to them. Fair enough to give them a second chance now that there is a Salary Cap but I'd put a team in Quebec first. They didn't deserve to lose the Nordiques like that. That was truly a victim of the weak dollar. If we were going to move Carolina then put them back in Hartford and let them have the Whalers back. What we REALLY need to do is COLLAPSE some teams. There are too many and they are there just to try and get more fans, yet it doesn't work because it cheapens the product.

Teams left because of the economics of the league and the fact that small market teams were at a disadvantage, especially Canadian teams because of the CDN dollar, at that time. Minnesota should have never lost a team to Dallas. Same with Winnipeg and Quebec. I have lived up north and currently live in the south and I can you that the interest from fans is not here. Yes there are some fans, mostly "transplants" from elsewhere who know hockey, but when you can go to Anaheim and buy playoff tickets on the day of a game, from the rink, then you shouldn't have a team! Most of my friends here have no interest in hockey whatsoever, its embarrassing!
I don't think many of the teams you mentioned will be able to sustain more than a few years of mediocre results before they are forced to move. (fair weather fans)
Lastly, not all northern cities are good markets either. Ever heard of the Cleveland Barons, the Kansas City Scouts or the Colorado Rockies? All were former NHL teams that folded. Yes I know the Avs are doing well, but what if they don't make the playoffs for 3 more years?

No way does Hartford get yet another team. Its a small industry placed between NYC and Boston. they do no longer % a third poorly supported team up there. If Hartford replaced into nicely supported (10k would not decrease it) and made money they could nevertheless have the Whalers. Winnipeg and Quebec city weren't worthwhile the two people. Thats why the Jets and Nordiques left. And Winnipeg replaced their too small previous section with a good smaller new section. Did Quebec even build a clean one? definitely there particularly are not many good markets that don't have a team that's why those cities nevertheless have communities.

I agree on most of your choices. I still think there needs to be one more NHL team in Ontario. This is where nearly half of all Canadian hockey players come from. The place will sell out and since the cap is now in place their is no reason the team can't prosper and compete. This is especially true now that the southern ontario fans will need passports to go to Detroit or Buffalo to watch hockey games. Those two teams will lose some of their paying customers.

I agree the N H L needs to expand to the NORTHERN reaches of the market. The south and west don't understand Hockey they are more into the Left turn sports (I use the term sport loosely here) and Foot Ball. They can't figure out how you strap a Knife Blade to your feet hit a small disc and traveling at 50 mph. Hell they can't even turn right every now and then.People in the North (with the long winters) grow up playing Hockey and love the game.GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if you want it to be a cult sport that would be the best move, those would be the best cities though to get teams. but i wouldnt move Carolina, since they do have a cup, and the kings have been in L.A. for a while and they have many fans.....as do the other two california teams.
