I see different people asking about emo styles. What is emo, anyway?

Emo is a scene that evolved from the emotional punkrock music of the 90s. Recently it has become a mainstream music phenomenon, with such bands as Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, My Chemical Romance, and AFI being played in rotation on MTV, re-inventing the pop culture image of rock. Its lyrics are renowned for having themes dealing with teenage love, heartbreak, cutting, suicide, and being misunderstood. The songs usually have a catchy hook, matched by upbeat guitars and drums, contrasting with its "depressing " lyrics. Vocals are usually high (tenor) and strained. "Screamed" vocals are a large part of the "screamo" subgenre of emo, but are not to be confused with the growls of death and black metal (Growls tend to be more incoherent and may resemble singing through belching as opposed to screaming. Metal is backed by pounding rhythms and may include more aggressive lyrics).

The emo scene is a teen-dominated, fashion-based subculture. The emo look may [stereotypically] include hair that covers at least part of the face, cut in dynamic angles, or dyed with an edgy color; glasses with a thick black frame; black nailpolish; lip-rings; thick black eyeliner; skinny pants; safety pins as accessories; T-shirts depicting emo bands, vintage objects, movie or cartoon characters, or flashy prints; hooded sweatshirts; and Converse shoes. The "emo" mindset may include being "non-conformist", being misunderstood, or being rebellious, which is often interpreted as cries for attention. The American chainstore Hot Topic markets most of their clothing and merchandise to complement this ideal (www.hottopic.com).

However, the emo look shouldn't be confused with gothic fashion, which usually takes on a more mature or more morbid outlook. Gothic fashion more often tends to incorporate fishnets, long skirts, corsets, Victorian-inspired clothing, bondage, or PVC, and tends to stay away from teenage casual wear such as T-shirts and hoodies. The Gothic mindset varies considerably between each "Goth", but doesn't focus on the same wrist-slashing, rebellious attitudes of emo. Gothic music, in contrast to emo (and pop-rock band Evanescence), is not as upbeat and features a droning kind of quality. It may be 80s rock- or industrial- influenced and has a sound that is generally less accessible to the pop industry.

[Back to emo..] The term emo has now become commonly used as slang to mean melodramatic or depressed (i.e., "Stop being so emo").

Emo is a music genre that branched from Punk Rock in the 1990's. It has since branched out furthermore into genre's such as Hardcore, Mathcore, Screamo etc.

As a style, it varies city to city.

Emo is a style/philosophy that is a jump off of the Gothic style/philosophy. Kind of like techno was a jump off of disco! Nana

Emo - Short for emotional.Someone who cuts themselves, burns themselves and ALMOST overdoes as to seem they WERE going to kill themselves but don't, but only take enough just for attention. They act depressed, expect people to ask what's wrong. Usually dress in black and have hair the face. They think their lives suck. So they're gonna sulk about it
