Sports fandom?
Has anyone spent much time in consideration of sports fandom?
I just asked a question about NASCAR fans, and I found that while a few were willing to attribute me innocent ignorance of the sport (not really accurate) most assumed I was a real idiot and couldn't figure out what made NASCAR so cool (er... "country" as one fan put it).
So, I'll try my question again here:
What causes someone to become a NASCAR fan? Drivers? Teams? Sponsors? Heritage?

I honestly think that it's a combination of those things that you mentined for certain people. I guess some people have the need for speed and enjoy the sport because of that.

I don't think there is a single easy answer to your question. For me, it was where I lived. I lived for several years near Indianapolis and the excitement that was generated by all forms of auto racing got me involved as a fan. The entire city gets excited about the Indy 500 in May and the Brickyard in August. It is contagious.
