How famous would one have to be to be 'Assassinated' rather than 'Murdered'?

Just a random question a friend asked. Would be interested in anyone's interpretation on this one :)

Well, to begin with, an assassination not only is someone being killed, but it is someone who is in a high political position, who is killed, and most usually, for political reasons, not just random. So, one would have to be in the government, in a higher position than just a Congressional Paige ... and I sure am not there ....

We generally only use it in reference to political leaders and monarchs etc.

Most people don't talk about, say, John Lennon having been assassinated, even though he was one of the most famous men on the planet at the time.

I think you have to be killed for a politicalish reason. Not because you owed them money or they hate you or you were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think LEADERS are "assassinated" while others are "murdered."

MLK, Jr. was assassinated. TuPac was murdered.
