Beijing Hutong Laws?
Does anyone know anything about hutongs in Beijing? I was wondering if anyone knows the current laws about the destruction of the hutongs. Where can they be destroyed? Can people refuse to sell their hutong? How much money does the government give people to sell them their hutongs? Is it enough to buy an apartment? Where are people sent to live after selling their hutong? How does the government decide which hutongs to destroy?

I am a Beijinger and I've lived in this city for more than 20years. I think I know something about hutongs.
They are destroyed for the construction of a moderner and more industralized city .The government will decide which area to be destroyed and rebuild soem other modern high buildings. That will make Beijing looks more urban. Those area are more than likey in the middle of the city or some very important zones.
And another reason is most of the hutongs have over 100 years' history, so they are in danger and need to be rebuilt. With a larger and denser population in Beijing, the government has to make high buildings necessary cause hutongs are only one-storey and they take too much space.
Some people refuse to move ,but most people would like to live in high buildings. I don't think the money government give them are enough to buy a new apartment but there's policy related to comfort them.
