Need advice from Bass Guitar players?

My husband plays in an alternative rock band that is starting to see some real success. They're getting "serious gigs" now. To date, my husband has been playing on a great 5-string bass but has been borrowing a bass amp. His birthday is coming up and I'd like to get him either a bass amp or something else that he might really use for his gigs. Any advice on what brand bass amp to purchase? I'm on a low budget so if it's not worth spending $100 on a combo amp (as I suspect is the case) then is there something else that you could suggest he might really enjoy using?

New Strings are always appreciated, I dont know if he likes using effects at all but Ive been seeing some really great deals on multi effect bass pedals for unbelievable prices.. If you were my wife I would dig something like that

All I can say is don't use a pick. That's the advice that was given to me when I asked the same thing, about 10 years ago. P and J basses both sound good. Most basses I've tried in the $500-600 range sound pretty good, I wouldn't go cheaper than that because you get what you pay for. The bass playing community always appreciates a bassist who plays with fingers.

Hi i am a backline tech for bands and a good amp for a touring bass player would be the AMPEG Portabass with a 15 inch cabinet attatched . this will fit in a car or van and will be portable enough not to need a roadie

    hope that helps

You probably aren't going to find a decent amp for gigs for under $100. Maybe some kind of distortion peddle would work for a gift.
