  • Christians--How do you feel about taking secular music and changing the lyrics?

Sorry to the non-Christians. This question strictly pertains to whether another Christian feels it is okay, or not okay specifically in church.

So....what do you think? Personally, I think taking lyrics to, say, a Top 40 song and changing them to something that praises God is a great idea but only if the lyrics were not offensive to God to begin with. EG; no cursing, sexual innuendo's, etc. My worship pastor disagrees, which is perfectly fine. It's his place to make those decisions but in the meantime, for my personal enjoyment, I'm playing with lyrics. LOL. Just curious, what do you guys think?

  • Does "OMG" bother you?

Our household does NOT allow this to be spoken. We consider it unholy. It's a personal choice that we, as a family, have decided to enforce with our children. I am finding it disturbing though that "omg" seems to be on nearly every channel. It's even the title of some kid's shows! Just out of curiousity, how do you feel about this? Does it bother you or is it just another catch phrase? and this isn't meant as a finger-wagging judgement question....I'm just curious. :D

  • What would be the Christian thing to do?

I'm in the Praise Band at church. Last year I was the piano player on a SWEET electric piano. The sustain pedal wasn't working so I brought my own pedal from home to use with it. After a time another member of band brushed up on her piano skills, took over as lead piano player, and a second keyboard was brought in where I could augment with string sounds. Unfortunately, the second piano was also lacking a pedal. I asked the worship leader (who is a personal friend and who is very tight with money) to purchase a second pedal for the alternate keyboard. Trying to play chords and flowing string sounds is extremely difficult without the ability to sustain. It's been 5 months and to date he still has not "found the time" to go to the local music store 20 miles away and spend the $20 necessary for a new pedal. I've also offered to go purchase on behalf of the church (which the ministry has allowed me to do in the past when something was needed since I frequently travel to that music store) Every Sunday I struggle to create a flowing melody line (keep in mind, I have to sing as well and I'm scrunched up over the piano to reach the mic and allow my fingers to instantly transition due to the inability to sustain long enough to switch chords and lines--I'm a beginner and am self-taught). The worship leader is sick this weekend so we'll be lacking our acoustic guitar and the piano player and I will be leading the worship, singing all the songs. This is where a sustain pedal is REALLY needed because the songs could use the additional chords to fatten up the sound. Part of me wants to take the pedal back into my possession to force him to go purchase a pedal, but I know that would be wrong. (coincidentally, the budget has hundreds of dollars in it already). I don't really want to go spend money out of pocket to purchase another one because that's why we HAVE a music fund. I shouldn't have to spend my own money to buy something I already own and have loaned to the church. I've already sat down and had a heart to heart with the worship leader about how extremely difficult it is to play without a pedal but it doesn't seem to make a difference because it's not his problem, it's mine. What would you do?

  • What would you do in this situation?

My best friend, Susan, has custody of her 16 year old daughter and her 12 year old son. She's been divorced for 7 years from her husband and during the entire 7 years he has fought for full custody, repeatedly broke the parenting plan, been held for contempt of court, perjury, and has been convicted of embezzling money from the county. He's the most evil, spiteful, manipulative man I've ever met. Unfortunately because he has worked as a paramedic and is now a firefighter, people ASSUME he's a good person. (of course, once they get to know him most think he's a jerk) Susan is the antithesis of him. Loving, caring, Christian woman. She works with at-risk high school students and was a special education teacher for years. She has patience and understanding well beyond the average person. 5 months ago her daughter began acting out and became belligerent and rebellious. She kept demanding that she wanted to live with her dad. Finally, she was sent to temporarily live with him. Susan's thoughts were that she'd see his true colors on her own and would eventually want to come home to mom. Instead, dad has refused to allow daughter and mom to see each other and has been letting the daughter do whatever she wants in an effort to be "fun dad" and encourage her to stay. (That's against the law, especially because Susan still has legal custody!) For 5 months there has been no contact until finally Susan and her attorney decided to enforce her custody rights and bring the child back home. She tried calling her daughter, and the phone was disconnected. Next she tried calling the ex and he said, "She WON'T be coming home". Finally the attorney sent a letter to the ex's attorney stating when and where they should meet to bring the child back to her mother. He didn't show up (that was 2 days ago) and today Susan was served with papers. The daughter has gone to a judge requesting an order of protection stating she's "physically afraid" of her mother and doesn't want to go back because "mom might hurt me again". This is an absolute, BLATANT lie. I've known the daughter (manipulative and defiant) since she was tiny and Susan doesn't have a violent bone in her body. She doesn't even cuss much less strike out. I'm FURIOUS with the little brat for playing these games (and that's what this is to her, a game) and Susan's heart is absolutely broke. She's--understandably--devastated.

I'm not going to give Susan any advice, it's not my place to do anything but support her and love her through this, but if it were me I'd be saying "SEE YA" to the 16 year old and giving all her possessions to charity. Easy for me to say since the shoe's not on my foot but still how I feel. Just out of curiosity, what would you do?

  • When did your child begin talking?

My best friend has a little boy who is 17 months old. Because we don't get to spend a lot of time together--and only talk on the phone for the most part--I didn't realize that her little boy still wasn't talking. He's never uttered a single word. Not "da-da", "momma", nothing but grunts, "ooh's" and "ughs". He doesn't respond to his name when you speak to him and doesn't follow direction well (which isn't too terribly unusual for a 17 month old. LOL) I advised her to contact our states early intervention office and he was determined to be eligible for speech therapy due to a signficant speech delay. It's going to be several weeks before he begins treatment though. I DO know both mom and dad were late talkers. She's worrying herself sick. Anyone have any experience with this? What was the outcome?

  • Would you like me to pray for you?

I try to do a "good deed" each day. I'm home today and therefore not likely to find an opportunity in my community for a good deed. Many people find comfort and relief from their worries when they know there are extra prayers going up for them. Tell me what you'd like me to pray for, *and for those of you who answer, please say a prayer for the person who has posted before you!* Collectively there will be a LOT of prayers and we'll all be doing a good deed. YAY! How exciting!

  • Help with obese friend?

I've recently become friends with a charming young woman who is in her mid 20's. We're just getting to really know each other and because she lives with her parents I've invited her to my home numerous times to hang out. I love her to pieces, however, she is morbidly obese--probably about 200 lbs overweight--and is destroying my furniture. She is so large she cannot sit normally on my couch, and constantly twists and turns in the chair to try to fit. I've recently noticed that my brand new $1200 couch is falling to pieces and breaking down from her sitting on it. The cushions are actually ripping apart. (okay, yah, I got ripped off paying that much for this couch but that's a mute point now) To further complicate the issue, she is in severe denial about her weight and constantly refers to the fact that we are the same size even though I'm not obese and am 3 inches taller than her. How do I gracefully, and tactfully, let her know that she can no longer sit on my furniture? HOW DO I DO THIS WITHOUT DEVASTATING HER?! I'm really the only friend she has due to low self confidence. Not inviting her over anymore won't work, flat-out telling her she can't sit on my couch won't work, and we're not at a level in our friendship where I can be totally and brutally honest with her. HELP!

  • Anyone else having major issues with Yahoo?

Is is possible there's a virus or something that has infiltrated Yahoo? I've noticed every other time I try to log onto Yahoo Mail I get "secure/unsecure" messages, and now I'm getting repeated notifications of "best answer" on the same question. I've received over 50 notifications from the same answer! This happens regardless of the computer I'm trying to log on from, be it home, library, or a friend's house. Is anyone else having this problem and have you received any word from Yahoo on why this is all happening?

  • Need advice from Bass Guitar players?

My husband plays in an alternative rock band that is starting to see some real success. They're getting "serious gigs" now. To date, my husband has been playing on a great 5-string bass but has been borrowing a bass amp. His birthday is coming up and I'd like to get him either a bass amp or something else that he might really use for his gigs. Any advice on what brand bass amp to purchase? I'm on a low budget so if it's not worth spending $100 on a combo amp (as I suspect is the case) then is there something else that you could suggest he might really enjoy using?

  • What can I do to close my Circuit City credit card account?

I have a zero balance on my credit card after paying it off 2 weeks ago. I'd like to close my account now, however, when I call customer service I get all the way through the menu options and then receive a message stating "our call center is experiencing unusually high call volumes. Please hang up and try your call again later". This really TICKS me off because I paid the stupid card off and just want to be done with it. How can I close it if I can't contact customer service to request it? Isn't there some law against that?

If they only go to school for a year to become certified am I correct in the understanding that they do not have an actual degree then? I want to get my Associates Degree as a CMA and have no qualms about later going back for LPN, I want an actual degree and not just a certification.

  • How to help paralyzed friend?

My friend Robert was recently injured in an accident and broke his neck. He is paralyzed from the neck down and will remain on a ventilator for the rest of his life. He's much like Christopher Reeves was. Unfortunately, Robert lived at poverty level BEFORE all of this happened. He is unmarried, has no children and very few family available to assist him. His girlfriend seems willing to stick around for now, but they were already on rocky ground before the accident so I'm not sure how long she'll hang on. They had no transportation, he rode to work with a friend. Is there any government assistance he could qualify for to receive special transportation given the state of his condition? He'll need a special van that is wheelchair accessible. Right now we're just trying to keep him from becoming homeless, there's no way we can help with a van. Thanks! (FYI- No workman's comp on this job either. Hoping homeowner's will cover from the ladies house he was working on)

  • Dreaming of a Shaman Indian. Is this unique?

For the past few years, each time a major life event is about to occur I dream about a Shaman indian coming to visit me. He usually brings symbolic hints of what is to come and generally signifies major life changing events. Many times the death of a loved one with hints as to the specific details. Part of me says, "yah, this is just your subconscious figuring it all out and the Shaman indian is just a symbolic person to lay it all out for you", but there's another part of me that knows it's just not possible because some of these "warnings" about upcoming events have been real mind-blowers such as unexpected deaths, views of unique and specific places I've not even known I was going to visit, etc. EXTREME details. Kind-of freaky! I'm dreaming of the Shaman Indian again and lucid dreaming at that where I'm physically seeking him out to get more detail. Are there any specific dream interpretations that involve Shamans or is this just my "weird" thing?

  • Okay fellow yardsalers! What to advertise?

I need help! I'm having my first yardsale ever (yes, pathetic I know) and I'm trying to decide what to say in my classified ad. I'll have about 6 lines to work with. I was not provided a specific number of characters, basically the newspaper just said "the more data you have the smaller the font will be so keep it as short as possible". Here's the details. It's an INDOOR yard sale at the TBG Coffee Shop at 116 N Main Street. (Not everyone knows where the coffee shop is so I think I need the address for sure but I also need TBG because another business across the street is known for holding "garbage sales"). It will be on Dec 2nd from 8am-3pm. Items for sale include a large volume of "like new" infant clothing, TONS of high end infant toys/accessories such as a Bounceroo, walker, swing, Baby Einstein Activity Center, Eddie Bauer Bouncenette, walker and toys. We're also going to have a lot of ladies clothes size 8-21 and various household accessories. NO JUNK. Now, what to say?

  • Why has kitty's behavior changed?

My once mild-mannered cat has become a terror as of late. She meows ALL NIGHT. I don't just mean the typical noctornal-meowing-playing meowing, I mean she's on my bed, in my face and every time I doze off she howls. She's waking the entire household and there's no safe room to lock her in. We have a very small home and she can be heard regardless of the room she's in. She's 10 years old so a little beyond training, although in the past the meowing has never been this extreme. Suggestions for breaking her of it? The only serious change to our habits and household has been the death of our other cat, however, that was months ago and she saw the other cat die and seemed to understand that he wasn't coming back. As a matter of fact, she's seemed quite happy now that she's the Alpha Cat. (could this be a syptom of Alphacatedness?)

  • Trying to remember the title of an old black and white flick?

I LOVE this movie but I can't even remember who is in it, much less the name! It's a famous one though. Basic story line is that 2 women are best friends and run a school. A young girl in the school who is very malicious tells her grandmother (?) that she saw the 2 teachers in inappropriate behavior, insinuating that they were gay. The school winds up being shut down and the teachers are shunned. I believe there was a trial also. In the end it comes out that the girl was lying because she was mad but one woman confesses to her friend that she DOES have feelings for her and always has. It ends with her committing suicide. Title?!!!! Anyone know the name?

  • Is there a telescope that you can view with your computer?

A couple of years ago my husband said he heard about a telescope that comes with software you can load on your computer where you can leave your telescope set up outside and see the view from your home PC indoors. Does such a thing really exist or did I misunderstand him? I'd love to get him a telescope for Christmas this year. I don't want to buy him something amatuer and lame.

  • How do you make tea from a tea bag?

Yah, I recognize how lame this question is but I've never been a tea drinker. I just bought some herbal tea from an herbalist through the internet and it came in individual tea bags. It says to make a pot of hot tea with it. I don't own a tea pot. Am I correct that I would boil water in a pot, say maybe a 2 quart pot, and then add the tea bag and let it set for 5 minutes? Do I need to squeeze the tea out of the bag? It also says the one tea bag can be used to make up to 3 pots of tea. Do I let the bag dry out then stick it in a Ziplock?

  • How to get work as a radio jingle artist?

Here's my situation. I have a great singing and speaking voice. I know this and that's not the problem. My problem is that I've always wanted to do advertising jingles. Singing, writing, all of the above. It's my passion. Yah, I'm a commercial junkie. I live in Nashville TN which you think would be the easiest place in the world to obtain work, however, it's exactly the opposite. In this city you either have to fork out a lot of money to an agent to scare up work for you (and usually pay his prices to create a demo) or "know someone". I don't know anyone in the business and I'm a mother of a 1 year old from a one-income family. I don't have the luxury of time to knock on doors on Music Row or the money to give to an agent. I've been trying for 4 years now to get ANYONE to accept a demo from me. Is there another way to break into this industry? Even voiceover work would be thrilling! I know if my demo was heard I'd get some work.

  • How to ease 1 year old into first babysitter?

My daughter is a year old and is an only child. Because I am a stay-at-home mom she is with me nearly 100% of the time. In the past, I've taken her to the mall once a week to the local play center to participate in activities with other toddlers, however, on our last play visit she became clingy and wouldn't let me put her down. I know separation anxiety is normal at this age, however, I'm beginning to become concerned that she's spending TOO much time with mom and dad. I feel developmentally she not only needs interaction with other children, but needs to have a babysitter for shorts periods of time as well. I've found a good babysitter I know and trust to leave her and plan to have her watch for 3 hours within the next couple of week. I am going to take the baby to "visit" her several times prior. Is there anything else I can do to help ease her into this? She literally has been with no one besides her daddy and I since she was 6 months old. (Long story but it's all on dad)
