How to help paralyzed friend?
My friend Robert was recently injured in an accident and broke his neck. He is paralyzed from the neck down and will remain on a ventilator for the rest of his life. He's much like Christopher Reeves was. Unfortunately, Robert lived at poverty level BEFORE all of this happened. He is unmarried, has no children and very few family available to assist him. His girlfriend seems willing to stick around for now, but they were already on rocky ground before the accident so I'm not sure how long she'll hang on. They had no transportation, he rode to work with a friend. Is there any government assistance he could qualify for to receive special transportation given the state of his condition? He'll need a special van that is wheelchair accessible. Right now we're just trying to keep him from becoming homeless, there's no way we can help with a van. Thanks! (FYI- No workman's comp on this job either. Hoping homeowner's will cover from the ladies house he was working on)

Medicaid? The people at the hospital who are caring for your friend (mainly the social workers) should be able to help your friend get situated with all the things he will need to live with his injury. He may not be able to get a special van of his own. He may have to rely on taxi/vans made for handicapped people to pick him up and drive him places. (medivan is the name of one that comes to mind in my community) Also, he may have to live in a group home where there is specialized care - there are government run places for that too. Not alot of people with this severe of an injury are able to live in a regular home situation. Im sorry for his injury, stick with him. He will need lots of support

He should be able to collect Social Security Disability and SSI. If he hasn't gone through this process, make the calls for him. It takes much longer than it should, but he can start getting food stamps and a little bit of income right away through SSI. Has he hired a lawyer? If not, get one who specializes in representing these kind of cases. As far as possible, treat him like you would any friend. He is also entitled to home care. Don't try to do all this by yourself. Get others to help.

Your best bet is to find a Department of Rehabilitation Services in your area. They are trained to do job related counseling for disabled individuals as well as helping them find government resources. I'm sorry about your friend and I hope things work out.

Well charity is the best policy, in order to prevent him from homeless kindly open an account for him, and the let us know, every body will donate according to his will.
I hope this is the only way to collect finance.

tell him he will nonetheless be able to operate really properly as he has using his hands. he will force a motor vehicle, go back and forth, artwork, do a lot of issues. Act widely used round him. Take him out to eating places and parks at the same time as he's able to get out. tell him humorous jokes and hug him. that's demanding, i recognize, because it befell to my brother years in the past. He went on to college besides and had his motor vehicle tailored with hand controls. existence is going on. i am going to say one on your chum. strong success.
