Christians--How do you feel about taking secular music and changing the lyrics?

Sorry to the non-Christians. This question strictly pertains to whether another Christian feels it is okay, or not okay specifically in church.

So....what do you think? Personally, I think taking lyrics to, say, a Top 40 song and changing them to something that praises God is a great idea but only if the lyrics were not offensive to God to begin with. EG; no cursing, sexual innuendo's, etc. My worship pastor disagrees, which is perfectly fine. It's his place to make those decisions but in the meantime, for my personal enjoyment, I'm playing with lyrics. LOL. Just curious, what do you guys think?

Update:

LOL @ Hal Roach! Thanks for that. I was hurrying through my post because supper was nearly finished cooking. :D You're right!

This has been done for centuries. In the middle ages liturgical music often borrowed popular secular melodies. Those in power in Church ordered composers to not use melodies which were associated with bawdy songs. This actually inspired composers new levels as they would compose new polyphonic music and hide the forbidden melodies within the texture!!!

Anyway I feel that if a melody inspires the soul then it's perfectly alright to use it for worship. Many melodies have been set to different lyrics over the years. All music comes from God anyway.

i understand i'm courting myself, yet i've got have been given somewhat over 900 CDs and approximately 2 hundred albums. very few are "Christian" in nature. Why? because of the fact the genres I desire are poorly represented by skill of artists of religion. My series spans Brit Pop, Jangle Rock, Alt u . s ., Paisley Undergound, Slowcore, Sadcore, individuals, college Rock, international, New Age, Ambient, Trance etc. a great style of the mid eighty's decision (while "decision" meant it) song became into crammed with requited love, political subject concerns and how we've been doing this or that to the planet. the different stuff became into purely flat-out goofy. frequently, although, it became into particularly possibility free contained in the greater mushy ethical concerns. the main eyebrow raising in all risk being Morrissey wailing approximately no longer getting any returned this nighttime. The song became into for sure non-Christian, yet, then, the techniques returned then have been slender, at ultimate. it rather is not an excuse. it rather is a assertion of certainty. as quickly as I crank up, say, Son Volt contained in the motor vehicle, i ought to confess that it's not bringing me any nearer to God, yet, then, i could argue that it won't be pushing me away, the two.

  • While there's certainly nothing wrong with doing this…as long as the legal requirements have been met and there's no stealing going on, even a good Christian isn't necessarily "worship". God does tell us to worship in Spirit and Truth. I think we need to take that into consideration if we use these songs as worship songs.

I've thought for many years that this is a good idea. There are certain songs out there that would make excellent worship songs and perhaps address a group of people not yet reached. If your worship pastor says no, then honor that. He is the God given authority on that in your church. Be very careful of dragging and celebrity-ism into your worship and any wordliness, but there are some awesome songs out there that would make excellent worship songs. Make sure you're really doing it for Jesus and nothing else, but I say go for it.

Many hymns have tunes from secular songs (be they Beethoven or drinking songs). There is nothing immoral about music. It is the lyrics that can stray into the immoral arena.

In recent times there have been many parodies of songs using Christian lyrics instead of the originals. Mark Bradford made several CDs.

  • We used to sing a song by Savage Garden with some of the words changed - we kept these tho *I wanna stand with you on a mountain I wanna bathe with you in the sea*

I actually had an open vision whilst worshipping the Lord singing this song :)

We worship our Lord God with our hearts, so each to their own, I'm all for it myself :) I'm blessed whatever I sing to the Lord...I've been driving along worshipping Him to a Bob Seger song :))

    Savage Garden...Truly madly deeply

Really? You think stealing is okay? Waw, that's a little surprising.

Try to imagine God's perspective. Do you really think He gives a damn whether or not a song you're singing was originally intended to be a worship song or not!? Omg, please! I'm pretty sure He could care less! Just do what feels right for you and don't worry about it. YOUR personal relationship with Christ is really all that matters.... music isn't even a factor at all.

Why go to the world for your praise and worship songs? Why don't you get your praise and worship songs directly from God. Didn't he create everything anyway?

Ask God for creativity and Im sure you can come up with your own unique sound!!!

Its pretty bad when we have to go to satan, just to find that right sound!!! Uggggg!!!!

It's a terrible idea. It will make people listen to the real thing since that is all they have. Plus, there is a chance it makes the singer into a liar. Is it all true that they sing? Maybe, but it is ACTING and playing a part to use worldly ways. Don't do it!
