Problems connecting router and cable modem?
OK , I have a linksys wirelessG 2.4 GHz router and a Motorola Surfboard cable modem from Comcast. I put in the cd to install the router and followed all the steps. However when i plugged everything in, the routers "internet" light is not lit, and also the "pc/activity" light on my modem is not lit.
I dont know what the problem is. I tried unplugging power from the router and modem and turning it back on but that didnt help either. Is there something else I am supposed to do? Perhaps my modem is no good because I did get it free from Comcast? Something else maybe?
Please my friends..any help would be appreciated.

Check our cable modem has internet by connecting it staright to pc by ehternet cable first. If this is working fine then unplug the modem from the computer and plug the other end straight into the routers wan or internet port and connect the computer to one of the other spare ports on the router. Power everything down and then turn on cable modem and wait a minute, then router and wait a minute then pc. Also check that you are using a broadband router and not a router with built in modem.

The issue is NOT the modem, but the combination router you have. You can't run your modem/router as only a router, because it has no 'ethernet input' (simple terms). The PC internet only works because the router is 'extending' the ethernet lines that are in it. In otherwords, you'll need a new router, but nothing special about it, just as long as it's only a router and not a 2 in 1 combination one. Or you could try using just the modem/router you have and unpluging the cable modem. I don't know if this will work considering it's a cable input and the router is probably phoneline input, but if it has the correct inputs read the manual on set up.

Ok, this may be a dumb question, but I have to ask it to be sure.
Did you connect the network cable from the cable modem to the router?
A wireless router still needs to have a wired connection to some kind of internet source. In your case, the comcast router.
If you did connect that cable, and it still doesn't work, then you probably plugged it into the wrong port on the router.
There should be a port that is seperated from the other ports and should be labeled "WAN".

The best solutions to the Linksys routers is to first setup everything without the Router. Make sure you can get to the Internet, then once you have connection to the Internet, insert the CD that came with the router. The router will take you step by step to ensure that your router and cable modem communcate properly.

The cable modem needs to plug into the WAN port on the back of the Linksys router. Then your pc should plug into one of the LAN ports ( you have 4 of them). Then power off the modem, router and computer wait 10 seconds then power on the modem, router, and computer.

If your Internet light on the router isnot lighting up then the first problem is that the moden is either not receiving or transmiting the right signal from Comcast. And yes it is possible to have bad or non-working free parts because they recycle the free parts from user to user...
Or your router is not compatible with your computer set up, and that would just cause everything to be "dead" which would explain why your pc/activity light is not on...

Try this. Go to run type in command. At the dos prompt type in ipconfig/ release. Then type in ipconfig/ renew. It might be ipconfig / release and ipconfig / renew. That should work by releasing and renewing your ip address. If not, call comcast modem support.

unplug the power to both - then plug in your modem - then plug in your router - they should work
