where do birds sleep in wintertime?

When it's cold and there's snow or rain, many birds which I see normally in my garden, suddenly disapear, but where?

Most birds will fly to warmer climates for the winter..they will perch in a tree, bush, or man made structure away from wind and cold and sleep for the night. Others have answered that they sleep in a nest....very FEW birds build a nest for roosting, most only build nests for breeding which takes place in the spring time, not the winter. During the spring, usually the females will sleep in the nest overnight while incubating eggs.

Depending on the bird they may fly south, however there are many birds that are in your yard year round. They don't use nests during winter, mostly cavities in trees for larger birds (owls and woodpeckers) while smaller birds (finches, sparrows) will spend the night literally on a branch in a tree, or in bushes and other types of shrubs. During very cold nights some species (chickadee & nuthatch) can be found roosting overnight in a nest box.

The birds that stay in the winter time they build nest and use bushes to keep warm. also for song birds they need plenty of food to keep warm during the night. It takes lots of energy for them to keep warm. I feed birds all year long but in the winter I make sure the feeders are filled.
