It supports a ton of different charities. Usually when you give then a donation you can specify which charity you want to give too. Dont for get a lot of United way employees get paid out of your donations.
Money is not a good form of charity, Jesus didnt give money, he taught: (give a man a fish and he will be hungry tomorrow, teach him and he will never go hungry again)

The specific organizations who receive United Way funds is different for each community. You would have to search for your local United Way.
If you enter your zipcode in the box at the very top of the national page http://national.unitedway.org/ it will take you to your local chapter page, which probably has a list of the organizations who receive their funding. They may be called "member agencies".
The guy below me is flat out wrong. First, board members are not paid. They are volunteer positions. Second, investing a little money in marketing and staff nets even more money in the end. Don't fall for that bs!

From what I've read, quite a large percentage of it goes to it's board members and officers. I used to work for a company that extorted you to give to the United Way every year. Once I found out that I was supporting CEO "fat cats"...I quit donating.
