The Belgranno was steaming away from the British task force at the time it was sunk. Thatcher was in danger of not having a war to divert public opinion and attention away from the drastic state of the country and her party.

She sank the Belgranno and got her war, mind you the yanks were non too pleased.

Ther Belgranno was an ex-us navy ship with a long history and they did not relish the thought of it being sunk by the Brits.

Apart from that, the Falklands sits on one of the largest and potentially most productive, oil and gas fields in the world.

No prizes for guessing why Thatcher wanted to keep it.

If you sail a battleship around when you are at war with another country (a war that you started), then you should expect it to be a target - wherever it is!

As for dr h lecters views (see above) - ask the Falkland Islanders if they want British or Argentinian rule.

Also - by the tone of his answer he is not British, but probably American (a guess here by me) - he should ask himself where is the origin of American people? A bunch of "planted British settlers"!

the falklands just says it all about the british.

argentina = about 50 odd miles, historic and legal rights to islands as of independence from spain.

england = about 8000 miles away, just slipped in planted a bunch of settlers said "hey thats ours"

argies had every right to try their little escapade, okay they failed.

eventually britain will be out of falklands, northern ireland and gibraltar.

yeah well obviously theyre going to want british rule - having been planted by the british and given british passports .......duh
