This is a question for vegan parents with young kids?

Are there any particularly difficult problems you encounter? Like school dinners, birthday parties...?

Are there people (at school perhaps) who try to put a piece of cheese in your kid's mouth just for the sake of it?

Are there any vegan schools where you live?

How do you kids feel about being vegan?

Is your child's doctor supportive?

I do not have any children yet... just thinking head :-)

Thank you for your time and answers!

Update:

***correction: thinking Ahead ;-)

Update 2:

Denise, that is exactly my point: I want my kids to decide for themselves and wont be giving them animal protein until they say they want it. I don't think it is vital for a kid to eat meat anyway.

And why are you SHOUTING?

Update 3:

Thanks to all the kids who answered - Sarah, Paige, Toffeebear - your answers are really informative.

And Gal_D, I also wish my parents raised me vegan - I remember not liking meat but there was peer presurre... more than now! I also rememer we were very small kids and were given milk at school and many kids didn't like it but were told they should drink milk so often that they eventually began drinking it...

Update 4:

Vegan&proud,

thanks for the link!!! I just kept agreeing with what the parents and the doctor were saying :-)

I guess I will make sure that by the time I have ids, I'll also have some vegan friends with kids, so that my kids have some vegan company :-)

I'm not a parent either but here's my two cents:

People on here are saying "You made that choice to become a vegan, they should be meat eaters and then make a decision" that's just bull! Parents who eat meat will obviously cook meals for their children that contain chicken, pork, etc. No one says "Oh you shouldn't make your children eat meat just because you do". I just hate double standards.

-Are there people (at school perhaps) who try to put a piece of cheese in your kid's mouth just for the sake of it?- I could imagine some kids doing that, people can be cruel.

-Are there any vegan schools where you live?- Why would there be a school that only allows vegans to go to it? You could always ask if they serve vegan meals during lunch.

-How do you(r) kids feel about being vegan?- I would say they'd feel the same way about being a vegan as kids who eat meat. It's what they grew up with, what they're used to.

-Is your child's doctor supportive?- I wouldn't go by what a doctor says, they don't specialize in nutrition. Most are still old fashioned to begin with and will be totally against your beliefs.

    Hope this helped.

I'm sorry, another person who doesnt have a child here. But I know people who were born vegans (mom vegan while pregnant/breastfeeding/rasing a vegan child). It seems absolutely safe as long as you and your child stick to a heathy diet. What I know is that those kids turned out just fine....I suggest that you google " raising a vegan child" and similar, there are many vegan sites on the net with tons of information.

I noticed some meat eaters already commenting that you shouldnt make a decision for your child, which is one of those things that really make no sense. Parents ALWAYS make decisions for their kids whether they decide that their kids should eat meat or be veg*ns. So don't let that get to you.

A vegan parent with a vegan child should talk to teachers and lunch ladies about their child's diet. If the kids with food allergies, and kids whose parents because of religious reasons want them to avoid certain types of food have special meal alternatives in schools, so should vegan/vegetarian kids.

I doubt that a kid would be bullied in school by other kids for being vegan. From my personal experience I can tell you that the adults are the real problem, sticking their noses in other peoples business and questioning our lifestyle of compassion and better health.. Even though they dont think twice about biting on a hormone-injected steak.

I only wish my mom raised me vegan. When kids are old enough maybe they decide to start eating meat, but at least they would have a good start.

My two boys are veggie not vegan. We as parents were always frowned upon by others for our choice to bring up the children veggie. But hey they are much healthier than their meat eating friends (or the chicken people as my eldest calls them)

Parties can be difficult when held at a venue like a fun pub or such like buts that's usually down to the rubbish menu's on offer.

Being vegan will make it a little harder because all the alternatives offered in these venues are cheese. I wish you well for the future !

Well, I am not a parent. But, I am a vegan and im 11 so, yeah i'm young but anyways, It's not bad kids don't try to sneak cheese in my food. And, there are no vegan schools where i live. My mom doesn't have any problems either with me being a vegan and my doctor um he thinks that it's just fine for me to be a vegan. I hope that helps you.

I have no kids yet but plan to bring them up as vegans when I do.

Obviously when they are old enough it will be their choice whether they want to stay vegan or start to eat meat.

And to all the idiots yes kids can be safely raised as vegans if you understand nutrition.
