What could be the likely cause?

I have down loaded the softwares for several phones samsung, Motorola, nokia to my computer(different times )but whenever i try to synchronize the phones using a usb cable it is saying unable to connect. Yet it is charging the phones.

Please note the latest one is a Motorola A1200.

xp professional.

Software and cables were brought with phones

Update:

It made the sounds and shows that it is connected but it won't synchronize. Plus it is saying poor reception on the phone that appears on computer task bar

make sure that in the program it is set up to scan for usb connections, most of those programs are set up default for serial connection

when you connect the phone to the usb cable and then plug it in, you should hear a sound (sort of ding dong sound) that will tell you it has been connected to the computer. also you could use the scan for new hardware in the control panel. if none of these find/happen then there is somethink wrong with the cable or USB socket.
