They might be in Dun and Bradstreet, but that is more of a gimmick.
Ask yourself, "What businesses might purchase goods or services from them?" Call some and ask if they know of them.
Can you get hold of any ex-employees?
Type their name into google or yahoo search. Bad news travels fast; take it with a grain of salt.

Before you sign a contract with them ask them to provide contact info for some of their past customers. Then go talk to those customers.
