Take an NSAID like ibuprofen or naproxen (Advil or Aleve) while the rash is present. If the rash is extensive, rather than taking oral benadryl (which can make you too sleepy), taking a non-drowsy antihistamine like Claritin or Allegra would work as well. If the rash is not extensive, Benadryl lotion may be more convenient.

As always, discuss these and any questions with your doctor.

I agree with Carrie about the predistone. It is a steriod that will help with the healing and it will heal so much faster.

If you do go to the Md it will set a precedence for the future so if you are exposed again you can just call the MD and they will call it in for you.

My husband has an allergy to this (worse than the usual, ha ha) and went to the MD about 5 years ago and got a scricpt. Since then, he has had to call them 4 times and they called him in his meds even though we moved states. Its so nice to have that luxury.

Good luck and DONT ITCH... ha ha just kidding... But seriously dont.....

I used to break out with poison oak a lot when I was a child. My grandmother would wipe it down with full strength Clorox. It dries out the poison oak and kills it so it can't spread.

As I got older I added my own version......rub it with Clorox as a way to scratch it and bust the watery pockets. (It sure made me feel better!).and I never remember it burning. It was cool relief!

I know someone gave a thumbs down above me on the Clorox.........I guess because they never tried it. It does work!

Calamine lotion never worked on me......way too slow! Clorox worked faster for me and stopped the itching better.

You might get some ideas from this site.

fresh cut aloe vera goop is the best long term---short term treat ment is a copper penny placed on the center on the rash will nutrilize immediately the poison but you still need systemic relief and the goop of aloe will do that
