Battles after peace breaks out?
Before the invention of the telegraph, when it could take weeks or months for a message to far flung corners of the world, was there a significant naval or military engagement after peace had been declared by European powers?

I don't know about Europe, but I can tell you of at least one American battle that was fought after peace had been declared. It happened when General Andrew Jackson defeated the British at New Orleans, one month after the treaty ending the War of 1812 had been signed.

I'm not sure about Europe but I do know that in the War of 1812 the Battle of New Orleans was fought roughly a week or so after the peace treaty ending the war was signed (signed on December 24th the battle took place on January 8th). Of course the British or Americans fighting the battle didn't know that.
