You shouldn't lose any information if you are just moving your computer. Be sure that you don't drop the tower. That could cause damage to your hard-drive; then you would lose "information." However, it is a good practice to back up your computer just in case your hard-drive ever does crashes. To do this, the easiest thing to do is buy an external hard-drive w/ a USB plug and plug it into your computer. Then you can just 'copy & paste' your important files to it. If $$$ is an issue, you could buy a thumb-drive (also called a flash drive) and back your things up to it. There are good backup programs like Symantec's Norton Ghost that will image (back up) your entire hard-drive to a backup hard-drive or to CD-Rom.

you could simply remove the hard drive.

Its as easy as open the case (remove power cable first)

disconnect the power cable to the hard drive (white connector)

disconnect the IDE cable from the motherboard to the Hard drive

Unscrew the hard drive from the case

pull out the hard drive and pack it somewhere secure

    Then reverse the steps.

Ive always kept every computer box that my computers came with.

I have moved a comoputer that didnt have a box -- by surrounding it with 2 or 3 blankets and securing it in the back seat of the car -- on the floor.

Ive had yet to have a problem...and I even still have an emachine 1.0 ghz from 2002 that Ive moved twice with.

    So far so good.

But Id also recommedned that if you have some vauable data -- that you go out and get either a second hard drive -- and just clone your primary hard drive as a fail safe

Or you get a thumb drive and put your most important data on that...because hard drive can go at a moments notice.

Good luck -- hope it helps -- I really wouldnt worry too much about removing the hard drive, if there was space in the back seat.

Only if others were moving for me would I take more severe precautions

If youre taking youre computer with you then it shouldnt be an issue unless something happens to it of course.

There are several things you could do.

    1. Make a CD or DVD backup of your existing Hard drive. (This method works well if youre using a DVD but that is if you dont have a lot on my computer)

    2. If you just have the occasional documents or other files that would probably amount upto 500 MB at most you could agains write it to a CD or use a thumbdrive to backit up.

    3.

Other things you might want to backup

Internet explorer or whatever browser's Favorites (Many folksd forget to do that ) . The process for this varies for each browser.

For example in Internet Explorer it is in File > IMport and Export

Your email if you use Outlook express or any other client to download them locally on your computer.

Your Music, Video and Picture Collection .

Ini files if you have customized applications which use an interface that you have taken ages to setup .

If you have lots of files the best process is getting them all organised in a folder and then using a program like winrar . Right click on the folder to backup and zip it to a file and then write it to whichever medium you prefer.

    Hope this helps.

your pc wont loose any information unless you throw it off a building or something. just save all the applications that you have shut it down. unplug it and physically move it. then plug it back in turn it on and it should be exactly the same as it was before.

Move away! You wont lose any information just from unplugging it and moving to another location altogether.

Your HDD should be fine even after moving so I don't think you need to take any extra precautions. Of course, you should be having a current backup anyway :-)

just pack it nicely. do not drop it anywhere. it will be safe. remember the hard disk is the storage so if you remove the hard disk and then move it with caution and then put it back in the system everthing will be fine
