Are MPEG files compatible with most DVD players?
I am making a picture slide-show but the program I am using will only save the slide-show in AVI or MPEG format. I am wondering if i burn the MPEG file onto a CD will it work in a DVD player.
I thought AVI files didn't work with DVD players... we did buy a Philips DVD player that does play AVI files though but I thought regular DVD players didn't...
I am making the slide-show for someone else and they just have a regular dvd player...

Yes, most DVD players play MPEG files but, most do not play them in the way that you are talking about. What you are talking about is whats called an MPEG-ISO disc, which is basically just a disc with an MPEG file on it. Well, its not that easy. First you need to determine whether the dvd player can read VCD, SVCD etc. A VCD is a disc with an MPEG-1 compliant video file(s) in a special folder. The MPEG is actually named avseq01.dat and is put in the MPEGAV folder on the disc. An SVCD is an MPEG-2 compliant file, put in the same folder but renamed to avseq01.MPG The easiest way to make these disc is by using Nero (you can download the free trial @ http://www.nero.com)/ When choosing what type of disc choose VCD or SVCD (depending on what type of mpg you are using) and then drag and drop that file into the vcd/svcd layout it makes for you. This will automatically rename the file for you and put it in the correct folder on the disc (there are 4 folders on a video cd) To make sure that your friend can read it, find out the model number of their dvd player and then look it up on the dvd player compatabilty list at www.videohelp.com

the divx dvd player just searches for and plays and divx compatible media on a disc. so you can just burn them as a data disc. there are special ways to make dvds for divx dvd player but there is no need . if your using your pc as your dvd player dont bother buying one. however on a crt tv the dvd player would give a bit better quality. so if you have the money and want a new toy to play with why not.
