Push mower revs too high?

I have an older MTD push mower that revs too high. It does not have a throttle control, only a choke on the front of the engine. It revs so high that the vibration makes my hands hurt to use it. In case it helps...the mower uses straight gas, not a gas/oil mix.

Where should I begin to find out what the problem is?

often times there is a throttle switch on the motor itself, if that is not the case, take it to a small engine repair shop. They could help, or even maybe put in a throttle for you. Small shops like this seem to be very reasonable on price.

Sounds like the governor is stuck.

There should be a small "lever" near the choke control with a spring attatched to it.

See if you can move it & spray it with WD-40.

    Hope this helped, good luck!!

It does have a governor with linkage and at least one spring. Remove the air cleaner and make sure that the linkage and spring are working freely. It will run slower if you take some of tension out of the spring.

I don't know the answer to that question, maybe something broke inside the engine but the simple solution would be is to BUY A NEW ONE.

check that you're using the correct spark plug & plug gap, clean carburator cleaner & air filter, use 87 octane,

Shaking is usually improper blade balance or grass build up.

Remove plug wire, next remove the blade & hang cleaned blade on straight nail to check blades balance, file blade to re-balance. dont forget to clean the deck while its apart.
