Why does my Jeep Cherokee's (1998) radiator fan keep turning on and off when the AC is on?

The fan is supposed to be on when the AC is on. But I don't think it is is working correctly; it cycles on and off continuously. It turns on for 5-10 seconds, then turns off for ~5 seconds. Is the signal to turn on and off coming from a thermostat somewhere near the fan? Or is it trying to control the speed of the fan by turning on and off (except that it is turning on and off way too slowly for that).

Thanks for any advice!

Update:

the fan turns on and off rapidly even before it reaches the ~195F threshold

this is the electric fan i'm talking about. there is another one which is driven directly by the engine

from what i can tell from the service manual, the Powertrain Control Module decides whether to turn the fan on or off. There isn't any information about whether it is using a thermostat.

This is a 4.0L 6cylinder vehicle...

when you run the air it puts a load on the engine and it heats it up and uses more fuel also

when the AC is on the electric fan should cycle on and off according to how much pressure is in the ac system ambient air temp has a big factor on this with a 134a system on an 80 degree day the low side should be about 65 and the high should be about 150 psi when the temp goes up as does the pressure and the fan is trying to pull heat out of the condensor to attempt to reach the achieved pressure of the system with out damaging things like the compressor

The A/C condensor fan turns on simultaneously with the A/C compressor. When the compressor is turned on by a call for cooling from the HVAC control, hot refrigerant gas is sent thru the condensor. The fan is then turned on to provide airflow thru the condensor to assist in shedding the heat from the hot refrigerant. If your fan is cycling that fast, the compressor is likely cycling that fast also. If so, it could mean that you have a low refrigerant charge and the LPCO (low pressure cut-off) switch is cycling the compressor/fan rather than the HVAC control. It would be a good idea to have the A/C system serviced before the onset of hot summer weather. Hope this helps!

It is working correctly and the reason that it turns on and off is because of the a/c head pressure, it reaches a certain pressure and the fan starts and keeps the compressor from blowing apart.

On max AC the fan should continuously run and on a lesser setting it will cycle but not that often....the are several switches that may or may not create this scenario... but the thermastatic control switch most likely will be the culprit....

Check your Aux. Fan Relay. Corroded or going bad. It will cause this. Two: if it's too anoying like mine was, wire it up to a switch. it's awesome. you can turn it on or off whenever you want to. When you're off road in 4 low, you can have it on all the time to keep your engine cooler since it runs hotter in 4 low. Trust me it does my trick. God BLess

Thats all computer controled. It comes on when it needs to.I wouldnt worry about it unless your auto starts over heating. You didnt specify if the fan was your air cond.fan or raditor fan.you may have a bad temp sensor on the air cond. unit. Its hard to say from way out here.

It sounds like it is working correctly to me, the car temp sensor is telling thr fan to come on and off to keep it at the right temp, around 195.

the electric fan is run by the pcm based on ac high side pressure and engine temp have the ac system checked for low freon level or a bad pressure transducer.

your talking about your condenser fan, right? the fan turns on with pressure rise via a switch, and off when the pressure drops. this controls parasitic load.
