Snap Dragon ... Well, I'm an American and I see you're retiring a little earlier than most people can. Congratulations and welcome.

Before I decided whether I should answer your question, I took the liberty of seeing some of your questions. You said your mother-in-law is Britian's 50th wealthiest woman? Well, then I hope the wife is coming along too. Money helps, of course.

You don't seem naive, so it shouldn't be necessary for me to emphasize this, but just remember that while America has many, many great things going for us, we've also got quite a few awful character traits too.

Places to see? Things to do? There are plenty of common travel tips available on-line, of course. But let me give you some of my ideas. How about:

    • The Kennedy Space Center when a launch is scheduled.

    • The Grand Canyon

    • New York's Radio City Music Hall, especially when they're presenting the annual Christmas extravaganza. The performance, the production ... all aspects are worth the price of admission. For a relaxed view, reserve a seat in one of the mezzanines, comparable to an upper-deck seat in a ball park. Or you can splurge a little and spend twice the money for an orchestra-level seat where you can see the action up close. Getting closer for this kind of show is my preference.

    • While you're at the Radio City area, you may as well cross the street and take the NBC tour. NBC, the National Broadcasting Company, is one of our oldest and biggest broadcast networks.

    • And just another block away is NYC's Saint Patrick's Cathedral.

If in the Washington, D.C. area, try some of these attractions:

    • The White House is open to the public, but after the September 11th attacks, security-related restrictions somewhat limit access. You used to be able to just get into a line, your bags would be searched, and getting in was easy. That was long ago, though. Check the White House web site for details on how to visit; the requirements may vary so check my link below for details.

    • See the Smithsonian Museums (2nd link).

    • My favorite is the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum (3rd link). Don't overlook the Air and Space branch called The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, my 4th link, which is adjacent to Washington Dulles International Airport, which is not in Washington at all, actually; check their web site for directions. At the Udvar-Hazy Center you can see dozens of air and spacecraft.

    • Is Parliament open to the public when the MPs are in session? Our Congress has a visitor's gallery, but I think you'd need to check with a congressman's office for a pass.

I'm tired and you probably are too. I hope this helps. There's plenty to see and do, of course.

Once again, welcome to America. We're happy to have you, sir. Good luck.

I've been to both...I love Britain, and alot of thing about your country I do like better.

However, I think you won't miss the food, because that was the one thing I really missed when I went to Britain. You won't miss paying high prices, because the pound is kicking the crap out of our dollar so you will save alot when your money get converted over.

Ohh, the music is ALOT better. You guys had some good music over there, but it always took longer to get out. The exception is probally a few good British rock bands of course.

The thing that will probally screw you up the most is driving on a different side of the road. I couldn't figure out why the British decided to do their own thing with that, when mainland Europe and the US have it on the right. Another thing is you won't get bored of finding things to do, as it really is a huge country. I travel alot, there there still are alot of places I haven't seen yet. The people will generally be very friendly to you since your from Britain, I don't think I have met an American that wasn't friendly to a Brit (well, maybe a pakistani or two)

If you ever get the chance to take a long drive across the country at a reasonable pace, I think you'd enjoy it (if you stay off of the interstate highways as much as you can...). You will see the subtle (and sometimes no-so-subtle) differences between the states/regions.

Anyway, here are some specific things you must not miss if you can help it:

    - Chicago, Illinois

    - A rodeo in Texas or Oklahoma

    - San Antonio, Texas

    - A college football game at one of the big schools

    - The Grand Canyon (North rim)

    - Charleston, South Carolina

    - Washington DC

-The US Air Force Academy (in Colorado Springs, Colorado) and Garden of the Gods

    - The Rocky Mountains (drive from Colorado Springs to Aspen and then down to Ouray and Durango while the wildflowers are blooming (in Aug or September, I think)

    - Napa Valley, California

    - Las Vegas (must see it to believe it)

    - Gettysburg Battlefield (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania)

    - An Old Order Amish community in Holmes County, Ohio or Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

    - Mount Rushmore, South Dakota

    -Yellowstone

    - The Outer Banks of North Carolina

    - The Redwood forest in California

Wish I had more time to list items. WELCOME!! And have fun!

I'm from California and if you decide to visit Cali, then you won't regret it. We have a beautiful park called Yosemite Park. If you visit it you will not be disappointed. We have great beaches in southern Cali, and in the summer they are simply the best. If you like amusement parks, we have plenty in southern Cali. We have a cool nightlife in any major city you go to. If you like off-roading then the Imperial Valley is for you. It is heaven for off-roaders. We have a lot of open space and desert terrain in Superstition Mountains, Gordon's Wells, Ocotillo Wells, and dune riding in Glamis. Just don't go offroading in the summer, it is extremely hot! Wait for autumn, winter, and spring. Welcome to my country!

Try visiting any of the parks listed on the National Park Service. They are truly America's Crown Jewels.

I stay in Canada. i love the way it really is so multi-cultural (particularly the position I stay - Toronto). there is one of those tremendous form of diverse cultures. With that, we get to flavor many differing sorts of meals from diverse international places. We actually have loose healthcare, so as it really is nice. The summers are stunning, even with the actual shown truth that typically it ought to get somewhat too warm, yet I nevertheless like it.
