Dowels are used in closets. They are the bar which you hang your clothing on.

Dowels are probably not considered a household item.

dowels are generally used in woodworking to join 2 pieces of wood together. they're not a common household item.

I use dowels for tuns of stuff. I make drop spindles with them (you make yarn from wool out of them). I've also made knitting needles out of them. I've used them to make curtain rods, flag poll for a decorative flag, legs on a chicken I made and I made a wind chime that I hung old forks and spoons from a dowel that I painted. I know there are others I just can't think of them.

Used most commonly for alighnment of wood pieces in furniture construction or for pinning tenen joints together so no glue is needed to allow for expansion and contraction.
