Roommate smokes?

You have every right to complain about the smoke. Be direct. Ask him to stop smoking inside the apartment, including inside his room. If he continue to smoke inside, then you have 2 options: to put up with it knowing that he is not going to change his behavior, or leave and rent another apartment.

Next time when you are looking for a roommate, be very clear about your dislike of smoking. In fact, I would suggest you find a roommate that doesn't smoke so you don't have to smell the smoke lingering on your roommate's clothes.

Explain your feelings to your "guy". There's nothing to detect: if you can smell it, you are breathing it. You two should move out of there if he doesn't change.
