A letter from my bank says my credit report has issues. I have been clean always, what can I do? (see details)

I had requested for a credit line increase to which my bank responded with a letter which says that they found an issue 'Serious delinquency, and public record or collection filed'. The letter says that the cosumer reporting agency which provided this information to the bank is Experian (experian.com).

I know that I have always maintained a clean history. But looks like my credit history has some bad records. What can I do? Should I contact Experian or my Bank or all my past credit card companies?

What is happening is you were either the target if identity theft, or those lovely people at the credit bureau put someone else's negative item on your report (happens ALL the time!).

There is a very specific procedure you need to follow. If you follow my instructions, this will be resolved within 45 days. If not (and this was actually a mistake on your report) you can sue the credit bureau and creditor for their mistake and win $1000 from each of them.

Just read the instructions in the link below. Feel free to contact me if you need further advice on this. Don't let them get away with trashing your credit!

You are entitled to 1 free credit report per year from each of the 3 agencies(Experian, TransUnion, Equifax). However, you do not need to waste one of your free ones on this. Any time you are declined for credit you can send a copy of that letter to the company, in your case Experian. They will send you a free report and this does not count against your free one. So you can still do the free one at a later time.

When you get your report if there are any discrepencies you have the right to dispute them. If they are removed they can send a copy of your report to the bank again.

Since you were declined, you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report. Contact Experian for that since the bank is telling you they got their information from the bureau. OR you can go to www.annualcreditreport.com and get a free credit report from all three bureaus. Everyone is entitled to one free credit report each year at this website. This way you can check to see what is reporting and dispute anything you feel is in error.

I would contact both the bank and Experian.

Check your credit report (you can do so for free) and try to find the negative reports and who they came from. You can correct them by contacting the creditor, or the credit bureau.

You should try to get any false reports removed, and try to explain any negativity on your account to your bank.

Ask your bank what company they received your credit report from (should be on the letter you received). Then, you have to call that company and they must provide you with a credit report (by law).

You'll see what company says you owe them money. Call that company to clear it up.
