You need a splined freewheel or cassette removal tool and a 'chain whip'. You can get these at your local bike shop, which is where you _should_ get them in order to make sure you get the right style. Ask if they'll show you how to do it. Hopefully this shop is one that helps cyclists become better cyclists. Otherwise, If they won't help, repost the question once you get the right tools and make sure you let us know what type of rear cog you're replacing, a cassette or freewheel.

Check out the Park Tool website. They have great "how-to" repair advice online. They'll tell you the best way to do the repair as well as what tools you'll need to do it right.
