FOR DOCS...Brain development in the first 5 years of life???

My 3 year old son has been diagnosed with Sensory Integration Dysfunction and we spoke to his pediatrician about the possibility of ADHD and were given meds to try (I didn't like what I saw with him on the meds).

My question is: Since the brain is still developing at the age of 3 and he clearly has some imbalances...can testing for vitamin and mineral deficiencies and toxins and introducing supplements correct the imbalances or is his brain chemistry already wired for the rest of his life?

Update:

I don't want to drug him or bandaid anything. He is overly hyper and has a social and speech delay and I want to know if there are any natural things I can do for him. He's adorable, sweet and loving but his brain is moving a mile a minute and he becomes destructive. Not because he is meaning to do it but because he just can't just can't help it. This is not for me, he has been kicked out of daycares and treated like he is a problem and I don't want that for him. I want to do everything I can for him and even with proper dicipline he can't function like a "typical" child. I am worried for him, I know what he will have to deal with in school and I want to help him before we get there.

My 5 year old has likewise been diagnosed with SID and we are in the process of getting set up for treatment. I don't want to medicate him unless we've done everything else we can. There is HOPE! Read the book the Out of Sync Child. I cannot recommend strongly enough -- try to get hooked up with Occupational Therapy. They have a whole program directed at helping him to develop his neural pathways. SID (or SPD) really isn't about chemical balances -- it's about the neural pathways developing at an uneven rate. A neurologist may or may not be necessary at this point. Here are a couple of websites that helped me A LOT : http://www.sensory-processing-disorder.com/

    http://www.spdnetwork.org/aboutspd/whatisspd.html

Also, we've found our treatment with a Behavioral Psychologist to be a great experience for both of us. Really, there is hope.

If you can find a full-service Child Development Center it can make it really much more simple for you -- all of your providers in 1 building and coordination of appointments.

Hang in there. If you want to e-mail me personally, please feel free.

    Thanks!

I know there's a lot of controversial studies out there as to diagnosing children with ADHD before the age of 5. I, myself have an ADHD child whom was diagnosed at the age of 4 when I noticed she never acted similarly to her peers at daycare.

Have him tested by a pediatric neurologist. Cut out foods/drinks with red dye #5 (you'll be surprised how many foods have it). Switch to sugar free snacks. Make sweet treats with splenda rather than regular sugar. Make sure he gets plenty of outdor time as the body needs sun to make Vitamin D. Make sure he's on some sort of multivitamin daily to keep his electrolytes and minerals up. Good luck.

most rapid brain development is withing first three years. By that time 80% of the brain cells are developed. testing for vitamine and mineral defficiencies and suppliment will not cause any harm to him. Be sure he is not getting vitamin ADE and K in proper amounts. other vitamines are water soluble and he will excrete excessive amounts

I am not a dr but lady.....don't drug your kid for some nonsense diagnosis like this .....it's impossible to know what is in a 3 yr old's head......I had a friend who went this route....kid was drugged all his life and od'd at 21. Maybe if she'd have let him be a normal boy, he'd be alive today.....food for thought. ps. a pill is not the answer for life's challenges!
