It is approximately 2 times 4.5 feet = 9 feet

It depends on how tricky your teacher is. The simplist answer is 9. The diameter equals the radius of the circle times 2.

    or diameter = 2 * radius

If you are going to have 2 benches at 4-1/2 feet each, then 4-1/2 is the radius. 4-1/2 times 2 equals 9.

But if you have a tricky teacher, then this may not be answer, because if the benches are 2 feet wide, then the corners will stick out of the circle & a diameter of 9 will not be big enough.

But if your teacher didn't mention the width of the benches, then the question isn't meant to be tricky, and the correct answer would be 9 feet.

The answer is NOT 9 feet. Draw a circle around a skinny rectangle and you'll see why.

If you laid the benches end to end, a circle that was 9 feet in diameter couldn't enclose the benches, because the corners of the benches would be sticking outside of the circle.

As for how big of a circle you need, it depends on the width of the bench. You need to find out the DIAGONAL length when the two benches are placed side by side. This line passes through the center of the circle, and should match up with the diameter of the circle. Then the four corners of the connected benches will fall on the circle's edge.

Regardless, 9 feet would be too small, unless these "benches" were horizontal flag poles.

i dont think 9 is the correct answer, thats jus twice the length of the bench. to figure out the diameter, u'll need the find the width 1st, unless 4 1/2 ft is the width. you presented it like it was the length. the width of the bench is the diameter.

u need to know the width. ur gonna need more than nine feet because the edges will stick out if its only 9 ft

it depends on how wide the benches are. You need to know the diagonal
