why would the destruction of erythrocytes cause yellow mucous membranes?

I put pale/light pink on my test but I got it wrong. The right answer is YELLOW mucous membranes. I don't understand why though. Please help me. I have a final on this in 2 days.

Update:

well..no one gave an answer, but i got one. the answer is because when erythrocytes (red blood cells) are destroyed, hemoglobin is too, and when we break down hemoglobin, we get billirubin. Billirubin causes jaundice, a yellowish tone on the skin.

Hi. Sorry you got no immediate response to you question.

I'm still a little baffled by your question.

RBC's are typically free floating cells, and are not really associated with other cell types (Mucosal cells).

However, you are right. Billirubin does change colors as it passes through stages.

Jaundice gives a yellow cast to epithelium (sometimes visable by eye) because of an prolonged RBC death rate which the liver overwhelmed with.

Let me know if you have more specific question.

Maybe I should think about your question more in depth?!
