What is the expiration date for bottled water based on?

Some newer studies indicate that plastic 1 and 2 may become unstable and carsenogenic when warmed. Most bottled waters are made of these plastics.
My guess is the experation date is an estimate of the time when the plastic may start to contaminate the water, and therefore could become unsafe for consumtion.

I heard that bottled water has an expiration date because over time, it tends to pick up off-flavors from its packaging.
The water itself doesn't go bad, but it can start to taste a little funny sitting in a warm plastic bottle for over a certain amount of time.
:] Hope that helps!

It is just an arbitrary date. Water can still remain good for over a decade, if properly stored.
