Help! My dog is a picky eater....?

I have tried everything. She will not eat dry food. I do not want to feed her wet food since all the recalled dog food. I want to try the BARF diet but unsure if it is safe. Someone told me to continue to give dry food and just add a raw egg, but is it safe? What are your thoughts...thank you!

My dog eats California Naturals. I don't if that's available at every store though. (Its not one of the recalled foods) Um, whatever food you are feeding her now, you could try adding plain yogurt to it, it helped my neighbors dog who was a picky eater. You could also talk to your vet on suggestions.

    good luck!

Is she losing weight? Is this a new thing or slowly progressed? A dog can go a day or two without eating as long as she has plenty of water and is healthy. I suggest putting a STRICT no people food or dog treat diet in place and get her on a feeding schedule. Same brand of dry available all day, canned twice a day (same time every day). If she is healthy and just being picky, thats all you can do. She needs to eat based on nutrition, not holding off thinking next time she might get something better. Let her come to the decision to eat on her own, just keep an eye on the level of food and her weight. Eventually she will either eat what she should and balance out her metabolism, actually feel hungry at certain times of day.

Raw egg is perfectly safe for dogs. Their digestive system is much tougher than ours is. I mean, they use their tongues as toilet paper, eat poop, and roll in dead animals for cologne!

You can also try warm water over the kibble, cooked white rice, or green beans. You can season with garlic powder -- dogs love it, it's good for them, and is a natural flea repellant -- but don't use salt or any kind of onion.

BARF is very healthy and safe IF IF IF you're willing and able to do the research to keep it balanced and keep up with preparing it for her.

Have you tried Bil-Jac kibble by the way? They use pretty high quality ingredients and although it's dry it's a very different texture. The pellets powder easily and don't crunch the way kibble does. Your dog might like it better.

Also, just in case: how clean are your dog's teeth? If they have tartar buildup on them -- a yellowy crust at the gumline -- then it may be that her gums have become infected and painful and that's why she isn't eating the dry food. If this is the case, she needs vet care asap. Gum infections can spread to the blood and kill your pet.

Have you tried Canidae? It's supposed to be excellent for picky eaters. My dog loves it, but he's not a picky eater, so I don't know if that's totally true.

She may stick with one food if you continue to feed it for her. I don't really think she'll starve herself. You could also put gravy or cheese or little pieces of chicken on it, and then gradually take that off once she starts to eat it.

I TAKE BACK WHAT I SAID ABOUT EGGS.

Raw eggs are TERRIBLE for dogs.

"[Raw eggs] Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain Salmonella."

And the BARF diet can work well. It just doesn't work well for some dogs.

As long as you make food available to your dog, she's not going to starve. My dog used to have the habit of only eating when I was in the room. I would come home from work and he would still have a full bowl of food. He did grow out of this habit. Whether it was because he was growing up or just plain hungry i don't know. You may want to try to pour some of that flavoring they sell for dry dog food (I think the brand is IAMS). Also, I buy liquid vitamins for my dogs at Petsmart and they love the flavor plus it keeps their coats really shiny!

You might try different brands. My dogs are both very picky also. I either add warm water and mash it up (when I have time) or mix the dry food with a bit of Pedigree packet food (No gravy)

You can also try pouring a little chicken or beef broth on top of her food - that should help and they love it!

You really should feed your dog what she wants. There isn't any problem feeding her wet food-she will NOT get sick. Your pet know's what she liked by what her stomach tells her so for her sake do the right thing! And NO eggs wont hurt her!!
