Were Vikings the rockstars of their day?

Did the Vikings rape, burn and pillage? Yep! Much like most folks in the 8th to 11th century.

But they were also great explorers and discoverers. They settle Iceland and Greenland and probably visit North America. French Normandy is name for them - Nor'men. Russia is too, Roos (the Persians called them roos - those who row). Viking ships were not just ocean going vessels but could also be rowed up rivers. They founded the city/state of Kiev, the precursor to modern Russia.

Interestingly, the demise of the Vikings came with a lengthy period of global COOLING. Their discovery of Greenland and Iceland was based on their ability to sail the open North Atlantic. When the cool period returned, these settlements were no longer viable and their own homeland became less hospitable as well. The North Atlantic was aslo less navigable. While we may owe a lot to these hardy exporers, we're probably fortunate there were'nt more of them and the climate changed to their loss.

Yeah - and they mostly wore black leather outfits too. Rock on.

The biggest Viking events anywhere is held on the Island of Shetland every January. It's called Aphaliah [something like that]. The whole place goes Viking. Most of the people are of Viking descent.

Lots of Viking outfits plus they burn a replica Viking ship.

Can't get more Rock n Roll than that.

From what I've read and seen on the History Channel and A&E etc. they were vicious warriors, raiders and plunderers. I can't think of anyone who would want to see them "perform".
