What is the most efficient way to make a self powered car?

My ideas are as follows

A giant spring propelling it...

is this a good idea? Do you have any suggustions?

The requirements are that it needs to go 7 meters and it needs to be self powered

No it is from 22cm-1m in length toy car...

    basically you are on the right track. you need a spring to store the energy you crank in. if you have access to an old style clock (that has to be wound) would be great for parts. you might even be able to use the spring in a measuring tape. attach the center of the spring to the axle and just roll in in reverse to wind it

    Keep it very light, with composite materials, and how about solar voltaic panels and an electric motor? A spring will not provide much distance.

    A car needs to go like 20 miles without adding energy before it is useful.

    Self powered? Can you put bike pedals on it? so the driver just pedals and the car goes?
