If you catch or pick the ball and throw it to the player who is awarded the put-out, you area awarded an assist. That means that just about every ground out is scored with an assist.
There is no such thing as a stupid question, just a question that an individual has yet to ask. But I'm giving you a number of links that will help you with other basic information.

An assist is made by a fielder who participates in a play that gets a batter or runner out, but does not make the actual putout himself. Example: a groundball to the shortstop, who scoops up the ball and throws the batter out at first base. The first baseman gets the putout, the shortstop gets an assist.

when you throw a guy out, by throwing the ball at the base he was going into.
