Is it posible to promote civil behavior toward your fellow American?

the best way to promote good behavior is to model it

ignore bad behavior as much as possible (don't react to every thing that annoys you, save reactions for serious offenders)

To promote civil behavior, is like any thing else that needs promoting, it starts with a common point of reference.

Civilility requires moral integrety. That needs to be founded on something that is not controled by acts of men. That is where religion comes in.

As the United States Legal system was established primarily for the interests of the "Christian" puritan, then the Christian principles make for a great starting point for American Civility.

The two sets of principles are the "Greatest Two" and the "Ten"

The Greatest Two: Love God and Love one another

The Ten : See Exodus 20, The Holy Bible.

Then build the civility code of honor from there.

The code should be one that is immaliable, immutable, and in changeable by men. The various religions (not including cults) should work together to derive the American Code of Civility.

Then we can get back to a civil way of life.

The only civil thing partisan extremists are leading to is a civil war.

To answer your question: Alot of people from both sides want that originally, but they only look at the worst examples of their opposition and turn to the same behavior as them.
