Volume Control on Stereo - PLEASE HELP. Serious response only, please?

How common is this? Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it - I HOPE?!?

This has happened to the last 2 out of 3 stereos I have owned.

The volume control knob just goes crazy! I try to adjust it and it jumps all over the spectrum, hitting whatever volume it wants instead of what I am adjusting it to.

For instance, if I try to go from 14 to 17, instead, it will jump up to the 20s or 40s or go down to 2, 3 or even 0!

This is the second stereo that has done this, and since they were each different makes and models, I know it is not related to a problem with just one manufacturer - unless several manufacturers are buying volume controls from a single faulty source!

IS there a way to fix this? (I tried taking one apart, but the circuit board was bradded together in a way that I could not get to the volume control to see if I could spot an obvious problem with it.)

Update:

How can one adjust volume in a wrong way? I just turn the knob to the right for more volume and to the left for less - but it jumps all over the spectrum when I do.

It sounds like you may be experiencing some strange interference issues. It is possible that if your amplifier is near a large source of electro-magnetic noise it may be effecting certain functions such as the volume control. If this happens when you adjust the volume via a remote control, it is possible that the remote may be bad or there is a lot of IR interference.

I would say that since you have the same issue with two different manufacturer's amplifiers it is not a hardware issue but most likely an interference issue.

To troubleshoot, try turning off and/or unplugging all devices in the general area of your amplifier. Try to use your stereo and if it works fine, plug in a device and test the stereo again. Keep going until the issue comes back and then you will have located the noisy device.

If it is happening with the remote, try the controls on the amp instead. If it is the manual controls, try the remote.

    Good luck!

I can honestly say that I have NEVER heard of anything like this. Especially involving multiple manufacturers. I hate to ask, but could it be some special way you're adjusting it?

Heck, I can't even think how YOU could do something wrong. I know this isn't an answer, but I really don't think it's a hardware issue.
