Can employer legally require me to attend a meeting without compensation?
My employer is requireing me to attend a class on sales techniques after my normal hours but are not paying me to do it. I already put in over 55 hours a week.. I am salary/commision paid. Where could I find statutes that will show if its legal or not?
I should mention that it is after hours, on my OWN time. This is considered a MANDITORY meeting as a condition of employement as it was put to me. I was under the impression that during normal business hours is acceptible, but after hours makes it compensitory. This is a 3 to 4 hour class (administered by people who have zero experience in my industry) and does put a hardship on my family care needs.

See thats the problem with salary-commisssion sales people. I would bet a $100 that if you where straight commission you would sure be there to sharpen your sales skills so you could make more sales and take away that hard ship you talk about on your family, or you would have been fired a long time ago for being a crappy salesman. Why cant you just attend and try and learn something and maybe next time the boss will ask you to host the sales meeting because you are a top flight salesman. Go and be positive!!!

If you are a salary-based employee, then yes, your employer can require you to attend the meeting. they would only be responsible for the costs associated with the meeting, like mileage, paying the attendance fee, or if you have to stay in a hotel.

It's legal to require you to attend a meeting without compensation... First of all, you should be pleased that he is willing to teach you more for free... He's not charging you...
And you will learn more of what projects or new stuff will be happening and I would be honored that they want me to be a part of it.. In the end you might see a bonus if you are attending the meetings with no objection and seem that you are interested in them... Learn all you can cause it will be of value to you while you are there or if you decide to go to a new job.. Life is an ongoing lesson.. Never stop learning..
Or you will be left behind... While everyone excels...
