Anyone out there on Fluoxetine (Prozac)?

The doctor has just prescribed it for my depression (!). How do you find it? Does it work? How long did it take to 'kick in'? Do you have any side effects? etc etc

Update:

Thanks everyone for your really supportive answers. Prozac and me are off on holiday tomorrow so I'll let the answers accumulate while I'm away...

I was on Prozac for a short while. It takes a few weeks to kick in; don't expect to feel wonderful for the first fortnight or so!

It comes in liquid form, and you can ask your doctor to prescribe this; that way you can build up the dose really gradually and minimise the chance of side effects. Ask your doctor about this.

You might not get any side effects; I found Prozac to be a very gentle medication, and I felt very relaxed. Others find Prozac to be stimulating, and this is why people are usually told to take it in the morning, so that it doesn't stop them sleeping.

Prozac can take up to six weeks to begin working fully, so it's a bit of a waiting game. As long as you don't feel worse, or unwell, stick with it!

If you really feel bad on it though, you must speak to your doctor for advice. Also: it's worth reading the leaflet that comes with the medication; the list of side effects is scary but DON'T be alarmed by it. It's just helpful once you start the medicine as it tells you which side effects to report to your doctor, and which should settle down.

Prozac helps millions of people; I hope it works for you too! But if it doesn't, don't worry, there are plenty of others and some people do have to try a few.

Well i have taken Prozac at the max dosage for 10-20 years, and it has worked well for me, it is now also used for people that have OCD, and works quit well to may i say. For the kicking in part well that would be different for each person taking it. I really have not noticed any side effect of that medication, except you seem to feel it kick in more , when you are truely stressed. And that is about the time that you feel you are having withdrawal if you miss taking it for a few days, cause it is working , and you really notice it. I take it for depression and OCD. 80 mgs is the max that you are to take, most people, take 10 or 20 mgs a day, but others like me take the max amount for it to work on both of the problems, and i have found it to help a lot, and with little or no side effects.

I was on 20 for about 6 weeks and then 40 mg for another 5 months. It took a very short time for me to start feeling something. I'd say after a few days I started feeling more anxious and like I had too much energy. It just got worse as time went on except the physical effects like diarrhea and the heart burn went away. I had some serious insomnia though.

I quit it very suddenly after I realized I couldn't handle what hell it put me through ie. after a suicide attempt. It was very easy to stop. I did get headaches, but I don't know if the headaches were from lack of Prozac or just because I get them sometimes. It took me about a year to start feeling better again.

It does work for some people, but not for me. Just giving you a personal experience.

Yup, i have been on it for 2 years. 20mg. It is great for me. I surrer from panic disorder and the fluoxetine totally makes me feel normal. If i forget to take it i notice i get symptoms again which tells me i am not ready to come off them yet. I have no side effects at all but the first time i took one it felt like i was on speed as they are quite stimulating. They take about 2 months to start kicking in so don't give up cos you think they are not working cos all of a sudden they will!

    Hi there,

I only started taking prozac about 10 days ago. First side effect I noticed was extreme tiredness so now i take them at nite and just eat something small with it. For the first few days I was having panic attacks, especially at nite, I was waking up very anxious. I also felt quite nauseaus too..thankfully 10 days later the side effects are slowly going away.. I haven't noticed a change in how i feel but I have to give them a while, i know.

taking Prozac made me feel better initially. I'm a 25 year old male. I started out on 20mg. the side effects were fairly minimal for me. common side effects are insomnia(little sleep) or hypersomnia(sleeping alot), fatigue, drowsiness, weight gain, and delayed ejaculation in males. I had some delayed ejaculation but that's good for the ladies. Since you are 21 you are in the age category of 16-24 year olds, where a study of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) showed a possible increase in suicidal ideations(thoughts) and a worsening of depression symptoms in some subjects taking SSRIs. This does not mean that it will happen to you but it's something to be aware of to tell your doctor in case it does happen. After nearly a year on 20mg I started having some suicidal thoughts and was feeling really fatigued/drowsy all the time so I switched to 40mg. I have been on that new dose for 4 weeks. I still feel drowsy alot but have less suicidal thoughts. I'm thinking about talking to my doctor to switch my medicine. You may find that the medicine works great initially but after a while that you need to increase the dose or switch to something else. Of course, your results will vary but I hope that my story will help you. I think that at this time I'm better off being on medicine than being off it. Good luck.

I was on fluoxetine for about a year. For me it never really worked, in fact it made me worse. But everyone is different, i was a teenager when i was taking it and they reckon it shouldn't really be used in adolescents. They say it takes about 6 weeks to kick in, and the side effects i had only lasted for a couple of weeks. After a couple of weeks your body starts to tolerate it better. Fluoxetine made me dizzy, nauseous, gave me the runs and just made me feel "spaced out". But this may not apply to you.

    Hope they work for you

I have been on prozac for 3 months, before that it was ciprimal. while the cip was fine for a while, it stopped being effective so prosac was prescribed. 1st 20mg then 40mg. I feel good, I have no side effects, and takes10 days to 2 weeks to work. Its a gradual change so keep a diary that may show a change in your reaction to different situations, then make comparisons. my life has changed and so has the life of the people close to me. My husband always hated the idea of taking anti depressants but he too had to give in to taking them, so now we have a much happier home.

I've been on it since January.I was on it years ago and it helped after about 3 weeks. This time however it has been much longer because I'm much worse. The doctor doubled my dose after about 4 weeks because it was having no effect.I do feel a bit better and am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.I'm taking my previous employer to court and my problems are now out of my hands.I've had no side effects other than sometimes I feel very chatty and a bit over excited, which is strange!I am glad it was prescribed to me I couldn't have coped other wise.

    good luck!
