AAD to MP3?

in a couple of weeks i will be leaving my house behind, but i don't want to have to manage without my record collection, which we estimate to contain about 2.500 vinyl LP's, the casettes i'll have to live without, but not the vinyl, no! not the vinyl!

so i was wondering if there was any way to get the signal out of my stereo and into the pc in order to get the albums into MP3 format and so making them slightly more portable?

i've tried the old headphone to mic thing, and an optic cable from the cd output of the stereo, (cd, should have spotted that really..), but the pc doesn't seem to be taking anything in..

is it possible?

or am i going to have to buy more hardware sharpish?

You'll want a turntable with USB interface or an audio card that has a good line in. The turntable is the easiest and cleanest, because you're going in digital instead of analog. Here's a link to one at Amazon (there are several available, but this one is relatively cheap)

You are going to have to speak to a music shop, the only setup I have seen to do this cost a few hundred in software alone.

but I am sure you could pick up some cheaper DJ software to solve the problem.
