Mailing fish to Hawaii?
My Husband and I are moving to Hawaii in a few months(he's in the military). But we don't know the exact day we're going, there telling us it'll happen in either august or september. So we won't be able to take our fish on the plane with us.
So the question is, how could we have them mailed to us safely(we love our little fishys)? It would be from San Diego to Oahu. And do I need to have a permit for them to be mailed to us also?

Make sure they are packaged properly, mailed by overnight mail, and someone is there to receive them with a set up tank. You will need a set up tank on both ends... won't have time to get the old one there and ready.

I am not sure about the conditions of sending live animals in the mail, you would have to research that. Maybe check different postal sites, like USPS, UPS, FEDEX, DHL or other Courier services.
But what I do know, is that Hawaii is very strict about plants and animals coming into the islands. Snakes are not allowed, and dogs and cats must be quarantined. I would visit the website for the Hawaii Department of Agriculture for more information. There you can get lists of approved species and contact numbers.
Hope everything works out.

Cool choice to move, Im from Hawaii!! Um, even tho, Im not sure on our laws. Like someone suggested, i would try calling a mail company like UPS or Fed Ex, they will probbaly help direct you to the right place. If not, we got lots of Good pet stores here that you can always replace ur fish with.
I know, i wouldnt trade my fish either but, sometimes ya gotta do what works.

I don't know about Hawaii's quarantine rules, but here's a great page about packing up your fishies to make sure they survive:

Occasionally, airlines will accept well-packed fish on an airplane, but there might be a problem, as the cargo holds aren't usually temperature-controlled or pressurized, so your fish may die of cold or their bags can break. You'll have to check with whatever airline you plan on using and ask around your LFS to see if anyone can help you correctly pack them for airline travel.

I'm wondering if the government will make you quarantine the fish for six months before they'll let you have them. I know they do that with cats and dogs.
