I need to get some ideas - Taking my girlfriend and my 7 year old son to San Francisco for a few days and need some ideas... I am thinking alcatraz and I also heard there was outlet shopping nearby... I'll be driving so I'll have transportation but would prefer to use the BART as much as possible. Any help??

BART? Try MUNI (yes, they're different) when you're inside San Francisco.

Use http://transit.511.org/tripplanner/index to help when using MUNI.

You might want to check out some books on walking tours/paths of San Francisco. There are many good ones with nice views of the city--like Twin Peaks (but if you venture up there be sure to A. take the car, B. wear warm clothes-it's windy up there!, and C. climb to the top).

I also recommend Haight St (Haight/Ashbury), Golden Gate Park (get a map-it's huge!), North Beach (little Italy), and the Castro. In Golden Gate Park my favorite area is the Arboretum at Lincoln and 9th Ave. Be careful in the park and take note: the children's playground near Haight and Stanyan is under construction so your son will not be able to play there.

Another place that is rather nice for a 7-year-old is the Randall Museum (not too far away from Twin Peaks). It's a wonderful small museum with a petting area (mainly rabbits). It has a good animal exhibit. Some weekend have events and activities for children. Another bonus about this museum, it's free (but donations are always welcome).

Have a wonderful time with your girlfriend and son! Good Luck!

Alcatraz is pretty cool, also Fishermans Wharf, pier 39 and your kid will love the exploratorium. Great America amusement park in Santa Clara is about an hour south down 101 and worth the drive. For shopping go the the San Francisco Centre at market and Powell. Don't miss the cable cars. you can get an all day muni pass for about 8 dollars each which is good on buses, cable cars, trolleys and the underground.
