Do you tip NYC taxi cabs?
I don't, curious about every one else.
A lot of them aren't even legal, and can't speak english.

Yes, I tip cabbies - Only when they get me where I'm going very quickly and are professional. Some cabbies give you attitude for no reason or try to take you the long way somewhere in order to get more money for the trip.

Of course you do. All NYC yellow cabs have to be licensed and it is a service business. Unless the driver owns the cab themselves, which is very expensive to do, they must pay a daily fee just to get the car, then add on gas which is not cheap these days and a NYC cab driver must make almost $200 just to break even before they start earning any money for themselves. As for Infantry, if you are to broke to tip cab drivers then why the hell are you taking cabs, get your *** on the subway or bus for $2.00 and stop crying that you are broke

Yes, I certainly tip cab drivers. But, I do admit I base my tips on how well the drivers do. If they drive the shortest way possible, ask how I want to go in case of traffic, a possitive. I am disable, so if they help me in or out of the cab, a positive. And if I'm with my husband and my wheelchair and they get out and help with the wheelchair, they definetly get a great tip. Take the long way around, be unhelpful,or as one cab driver once did, started before my mother had closed the door, forget the tip. But, they are like waitstaff, they work for their tips, so it is the polite thing to do, so I tip.

Yes, I live in NY after moving from England. I was so confused about the whole tipping thing at first. Then I found out how much the guys get paid over here, minimum wage is ridiculous. Therefore I would tip a cabby about 10 - 15%, it's the only way they make a decent wage.

Yes you should tip a cabbie.
If they take your bags a little more
But it is a personal decision.
They make a lot and they are rude, and without customer service
So you are going to have to go with your gut on this one.

yes... and i tip wait staff too. as i taught my kids, if you can't afford the tip, then you don't go there. if you can't afford the tip, there always IS the subway and the bus service. as far as your rationalization, about 'them not knowing english, or being legal', it's not possible to get a medallion without documentation and language skills. if you wind up in a car with someone who doesn't match the medallion displayed, call the taxi and limousine commision, at 311,and give them the car number, license number.

No way! All they do is drive you around, if they wanted to make more money they should have become something else. I like cab drivers, they are the most interesting people anywhere, but I would never tip one, Im already broke as is, i dont make enough to tip other people.
