"Shall I Compare Thee...?" is a sonnet about a woman, whose fairness Shakespeare compares with a summer's day. The underlying message, however, is about the immortality of (the woman's) beauty - preserved in the words of the sonnet itself. The tone of the poem is light and almost conversational - related in the first person, as if speaking directly to the addressee herself.
