Is it ok to feed a dog a mainly meat diet?
Is he getting enough nutrition from just eating meat. Ive had terrible trouble getting him to eat. Ive tried everythink all different brands of foods dry and canned! One day he'll eat some then the next nothing. Ive mixed meat into his dry food but he just takes his time picking out the meat. Ive been really patient and stopped giving him treats but he will go 5 days before eating and just look at his bowl like im not eating that! Ive changed his bowls and everythink. Ive spent alot of money and buy quality food from my vet, but nothing! Somethimes he even wont eat chicken if hes had it the day before. The vet has run tests and theres nothing wrong!
So will he get most nutrients from eating meat or any other ideas?
Thanks i no this may sound stupid but ive never had a dog that is so fussy and headstrong. Hes been the same since 8weeks old.
I keep him on the same brand for a while but nothin!
He doesnt like table scraps

yes its ok to have a mostly meat diet for the dog. Our dog would never eat anything else which we were worried about. He is 11 years old now and still in great helath. Happy days

No, a mostly meat diet is not good for your dog. It can cause him to have too much protein which leads to kidney failure and kill him. Stop feeding the dog so many different kinds of dog food. Pick one that has balanced nutrition and stick with it and he will start to eat it on a regular basis. If he doesn't eat for a day or two, he will eat when he gets hungry enough. If you talked to your vet about this, I'll bet he told you the same thing I've just said. Don't leave extra food in the bowl for him to snack on throughout the day and he will be hungry when you feed him. Don't feed him from the table while you are eating.

Yes it's ok to feed raw meat. Make sure that the meat is human food grade, if its wild/game meat then you need to freeze it for a month first and it still carries some risk of parasites... Dogs digestive tracts are geared up to digesting potentially 'off' meat, with strong stomach acid and short length of gut. This is why they can eat things we can't (our stomach acid is not as strong and our gut quite a lot longer). There is a risk of things like e. coli and salmonella, but actually dry dog food also carries this risk. You should make sure to feed raw meat that is either on the bone (things like chicken wings, lamb ribs, whole rabbits, no weight bearing bones from larger animals though), or minced meat that contains minced bone. Otherwise your dog will not be getting the correct calcium to phosphorus ratio. Don't mix raw meat with cooked products such as dry dog food as the two foods digest at different rates and you might give your pup a tummy ache. All of my dogs eat a raw diet, I recommend Ian Billingshursts 'Give your dog a bone' on the subject. I have been feeding raw for over 10 years to six dogs, not one has become ill nor been injured feeding this way (though its wise to know that there are risks just as there are with everything in life!). I raised my lurcher puppy from 6 weeks old on a raw diet - he is 12 now and a fine fit fellow!

No, it's far too high in Protein for a dog and will cause issues.
The meal needs to be balanced. Look up a diet called BARF which is raw meat & veggies.
I'd reccomend taking your dog to the Vets for checkup, there maybe something wrong.
If your dog is a decent weight then don't worry, some dogs don't need much because they have a slow metabolism.
There is a product you can get from your Vet called NutriGel, it assists with appeite.

No...It is not! You are feeding too much protein and that will manifest into major problems...both healthwise and in the dogs behaviour.
Pick a well made complete food and give the dog only that. (It will contain everything that your dog needs!) You are being extremely soft with your dog. Put the food down at the same time each day and leave it there for ten minutes. If it is not touched pick it up and put it back in the bag. The dog will eat when it is hungry!
Believe me..No-one loves their dogs more than I love mine but I always remember that they are DOGS!

I think Recycled has said it all. The most important thing to do is buy a good dried food, and stick with that. You could have a look at www.trophypetfoods.co.uk.
If you do have to give the dog a vitamin supplement, or any kind of tablet, try squishing it into a lump of corned beef or hard cheese. I had terrible trouble with my first dog who wouldn't eat, and was in very poor condition (she is a rescue dog). I managed to get the extra vitamins into her by means of the corned beef trick.
Good luck, I hope you get sorted soon.

Some dogs like variety. I have a dog that likes something differnet everyday. A dog needs a variety of nourishment just like we so. I now have started giving him Pedigree Complete. This is a meal who buy in a bag. It is a mixture of meat, veg, cereals etc... All the stuff a healthy dog needs. It works out a lot cheaper than dog food. I bought a small bag first to see if he would like it. And he does like it. The bag comes in different sizes.Next time I might buy the largest size.

A natural/barf diet is fine for dogs ,and, cats-but its a diet that has avid followers and critics.Do some research on it first just so that you see what you can feed him.Ifeed my dog on the barf diet and he is great (vet checked him recently and was gushing!!)you do feed small amounts of veg/fruit on the barf diet.
Dont let him become a fussy eater though, keep feeding him the food of whatever regime you end up using. What he dosent eat empty and give him fresh lot at the next mealtime.

Really the dog is not getting the vitamine supplements to support healthy growth and wellness. If you are going to keep him on an all meat diet you need to speak with your vet about some vitamine supplements to slip into your doggies food.

Some dogs get fedup with the usual tinned food. My dog gets turned off and likes to eat cabbage...peas....beans and some other veggies. he also likes to lap up veg juices and occasionaly takes a liking to chicken pieces that has just been cooked. My dog likes fried huss from the chippie. Dogs smell a lot and if the smell is not to their liking they get turned off. ALL and all dont pile thedog dish...and dont forget...take him for lots ts of walks to build their appetite.
