would you go to a different mechanic?
i dropped my car off yesterday. i told him it my car starts and runs great first thing in the morning, but if i run in the store when i come out it dosent start unless i hold my foot on the gas pedal and turn it over - then takes about 5 seconds and it starts rough but as soon as i put it in gear runs great again. + i asked him to change my starter. cause it makes that loud screaming sound once in awhile.
when i called him today he said- im not 100% sure its the starter. its a stinker of a job in labor and the starter is 200$. and im not sure what to fix on you other problem either. 10 things came up on the codes. i cleared all the codes now. bring it back friday. ill look at it again and see what comes up on the codes.
i really like this guy (he has a great personality). his shop is nice. but i think i lost my faith in him... would you bring your car back???

Take it somewhere else. He is over his head and taking the wrong first steps in diagnostic work. I could get real long winded on that, but suffice it to say that clearing the codes is NOT the right starting point. Get your car back and go to a different tech.

I had similar problems with a Dodge Intrepid. I found a mechanic that services commercial trucks and they were able to resolve my problems with codes and hard or not starting. Also have you checked the distributor cap for cracks or scorching. It sounds like a timing problem could be causing your troubles. Since you said that when cold the car starts fine but once warm it is difficult
to start. Also make sure all the vacum hoses are hooked up and not missing or cracked

when hes talking about clearing codes, hes in the wrong area.i have a 88 olds, and mine use to the same thing, until i changed the idle air control.it controls how much air to give it,for the amount of gas.even though you like this guy, this is business and you need someone who knows what hes talking about, because this is your livelyhood.find someone else about this problem.he might be ok for other stuff, but hes in the wrong area on this.

Give him another chance if you like him. He may have been having a bad day. Believe me , it happens. It sounds like your engine is flooding with gas after you shut it off . Check it for a leaky fuel regulator. If this is the problem, you smell a little gasoline when trying to start it. Hope it helps.

doesnt seem like the starter is the problem it may be your idle air control valve
