What is the difference between a harware and a software?

Hardware - The nuts and bolts that make up your PC. Basically it's any part you can touch or see physically.

Software - The applications that you have stored on your PC. It's the ones and zeros that the computer turns into the sounds and pictures you see.

Firmware - A combination of the two. It's physical, but there's a programmable part to it as well and this programming can be changed and upgraded.

The hardware is the physical pieces that make up the computer for instance the motherboard, hard drive, cd/dvd rom, keyboard, power supply, cables, monitor and printer, the list can really just keep going.

The hardware itself doesn't actually know anything, in fact really its just a useless pile of bits. You turn it on and it doesn't know whether its a washing machine or a toaster, it sits there twiddling its thumbs trying to work out what its purpose is.

Enter the software, The software is the brain of the computer, the first bit of software to get loaded is the BIOS, this tells the computer its a computer and where to locate the operating system, in the case of the operating system it controls how the hardware works and gives you and the applications an interface to the hardware. Applications are what let you do your word processing, games, internet ect.

Software is what lets you do things, hardware is the physical aspect.

You can hold hardware in your hand (an object). Software you can't see unless you have a computer. Hardware are all the things that you can see that make up your computer (for example). Software are programs that you load off a disk or the internet to use.

Hardware are the parts of the computer you can touch, feel, pour water on and short circuit .... it's the metal and electrical stuff. You need a screwdriver to fix hardware problems

Software is made of Zeros and Ones. The Programes that you click on and show on the monitor. You use a keyboard and mouse to fix software problems. Found on CDs. (Try saving this page then open it using "Notepad")

Computer Hardware is like our body vital and other organs (brain, heart, lungs ect.) and all the parts (nervous , muscles and skeleton systems etc.)

Computer Software is similar to the brain, with its content, control the vital organ's functions, maintaining all constants (heart rate,blood composition, body temperarture etc.), immunological action against invations from virus & bacteria, collection and control data in our brain and so on and so forth.

Software is an idea. Hardware is the physical component for the implementation of that idea.
