Alaska has belonged to the United States since 1867, when it was bought from Russia by Secretary of State William H. Seward. The United States paid Russia $7.2 million for the rights of the Russian American Company in Alaska.

He bought from Russia for the EXACT amount Czar Alexander requested to be paid for sending his fleet all the way to American waters to set up a blockade of the entire eastern seaboard of the U.S to stop British and French interference in the Civil War since President Johnson had no constitutional right to use taxpayer dollars to pay a debt to a foreign government!!
