When did school first begin?

I know it hasn't always been around. When did it begin, and who "invented" it?

    School as we know it today started in the industrial revolution. People who were going to work in factories needed some basic skills to be able to function in the work environment.

    After laws were passed in Britain protecting children in the work place mandatory education was not far behind. In the US the first place with compulsory education was Massachusetts in 1852.

    If I'm not mistaken it was the ancient Sumerians which would put it somewhere around 4000-3500 B.C. That is to say they formalized an institution with the goal of educating it's people. It was adapted modified and refined, giving us something like the Greek University. But school, in the sense I described began with Sumer.

    The first real school was started by Plato in 385 B.C.E. called "The Academy".
