Your only other options besides a land-line (DSL/Dialup) would be cable, satellite, Wifi or cellular.
However, you CAN get DSL without voice service through your phone company. Currently I have 3Mb DSL through Verizon, but I do NOT have voice service. If I plug a phone into the line, I get a recording saying that "you do not have dial service on this line" or something to that effect. They call it a "dry loop" and may make your DSL cost a few dollars more ($5/mo for me).
I don't know about your area, but DSL even without voice is the cheapest option in my area. To give you an idea...
768k DSL: $15 (+$5 for dry loop)
3Mb DSL: $30 (+$5 for dry loop)
Unlimited 3G (cellular / Cingular): $45
Cable (Time Warner): $50
Satellite: $75
Wifi: None in my area
You may also want to talk with the local phone provider and ask if FiOS service is available. It's a little more expensive than DSL, cheaper than cable and is pure fiber optic to your home. There are different levels of service, but I believe you can get a 30Mb connection if you want to spend the cash.

Because DSL is operated over telephone lines, you have to have phone service to get it. Your only other viable option would be cable. In Philadelphia I had cable internet without cable TV but you should inquire with your local cable provider. If you already have cable television, usually a discount is provided for adding internet service.

DSL requires a phone line, the only way to get quick service without a phone line is to go with Cable or Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is already built into the network card of your laptop, if you have a desktop you can still get Wi-Fi with a wireless adapter. Basically what you do is pay for access or go to "hot-spots" that allow free access to the Internet. These are generally McDonald's, libraries and Starbucks. Try the University of Missouri or the St. Louis Hot Spots Online Guide. The other method involves people keeping their local area networks unmanned, which means that anyone can get onto the signal without putting in a password. People usually figure it out after a while, because the more people that hijack the signal, the slower it is for them to connect. Some people even charge for access, whereas you pay for time on their network. If you want wired access stress that you're looking for broadband. Check out the broadband service providers site I linked to below for information on that. Another alternative is satellite. Broadband is more expensive than DSL, but cheaper than satellite or wireless access. Broadband is generally faster than DSL, under perfect conditions, because everyone in that neighborhood who is wired is sharing the bandwidth. Wi-Fi has security concerns, particularly when you aren't paying for it and are hijacking someone else's network. That someone else could record your information if you aren't visiting websites that utilize 128-bit security. If you have the bright idea of routing your broadband signal throughout your house wirelessly, as many people do so everyone in the house can connect with their laptop to the same connection so as people don't get on each other's nerves, make sure that the signal is encrypted and password protected. Know what you're paying for, dial-up access is 56k and typically costs as low as $5 a month. High-Speed, regardless of what it is, could start as low as 64k; really all that high-speed means is that it is faster than dial-up. To really make it cost effective, you need speeds that are 4 times or more that of dial-up, as high-speed usually starts at around $50. Why pay $50 for 128k access; AOL still costs $24 a month. Make sure you're getting at least 300k or more if you're going to pay that amount ($50). Also take into consideration that, like dial-up, speeds are going to vary; during peak times your high-speed connection may not even be as fast as dial-up.

Without a phoneline, cable or Satalitte is your best option... If you have a compatable Cell Phone, you might be able to use this as a wireless modem
